Numismatist (specialist)
A numismatist is a specialist, researcher, and/or well-informed collector of numismatics/coins ("of coins"; from Late Latin , genitive of ). Numismatists can include collectors, specialist dealers, and scholar-researchers who use coins (and possibly, other currency) in object-based research. Although use of the term ''numismatics'' was first recorded in English in 1799, people had been collecting and studying coins long before then all over the world. (The branch of numismatics that deals with the study and collection of paper currency and banknotes by notaphilists is called Notaphily) Numismatist collectors This group chiefly may derive pleasure from the simple ownership of monetary devices and studying these coins as private amateur scholars. Numismatics
Numismatics is the study or collection of currency, including coins, tokens, paper money, medals, and related objects. Specialists, known as numismatists, are often characterized as students or collectors of coins, but the discipline also includes the broader study of money and other means of payment used to resolve debts and exchange good (economics), goods. The earliest forms of money used by people are categorised by collectors as "odd and curious", but the use of other goods in barter exchange is excluded, even where used as a circulating currency (e.g., cigarettes or instant noodles in prison). As an example, the Kyrgyz people used horses as the principal currency unit, and gave small change in sheepskin, lambskins; the lambskins may be suitable for numismatic study, but the horses are not. British Numismatic Society
The British Numismatic Society exists to promote the study and understanding of British numismatics. The Society was founded in 1903, focusing on all forms of coinage, tokens, banknotes and medals relating to the British Isles and former parts of the British Empire. The society promotes the understanding of numismatics through holding regular lectures and meetings as well as producing a number of publications. These include the ''British Numismatic Journal'', the major journal for British numismatics. Publications Its principal publication is the ''British Numismatic Journal'' (''BNJ''), published from 1903. Michel Amandry
Michel Amandry (born in 1949) is a French numismatist. Career Michel Amandry, the son of the archaeologist Pierre Amandry, studied in Strasbourg and Paris, where in 1979 he received his doctorate at the Sorbonne. From 1991 to September 2013 he was director of the Cabinet des Médailles, the Department of Coins, Medals and Antiquities of the Bibliothèque nationale de France. He also teaches numismatics as 'directeur d'études' in the École pratique des hautes études in Paris. His research focus is the numismatics of the Roman Empire. Michael Alram
Michael Alram (born 1956) is an Austrian historian and a numismatist. He obtained his doctorate in the University of Vienna in 1982, in Ancient Numismatics and Classical Archaeology. Martin Allen (numismatist)
Martin Allen, FSA, is a British numismatist and historian, specialising in medieval English coinage. Allen is the Senior Assistant Keeper of Numismatics at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, United Kingdom. Education and career Martin Allen earned his Ph.D. at Durham University, with a thesis in archaeology, focusing on the Durham mint. He joined the Department of Coins and Medals at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1997, where he looked after the Corpus of Early Medieval Coin Finds (EMC). He is affiliated with Wolfson College, where he serves as lecturer in the Faculty of History, teaching numismatics and medieval monetary history; he also serves as a College Research Associate. He has an extensive publication record, for which he was awarded a Doctor of Letters (LittD) in 2013. Andreas Alföldi
András (Andreas) Ede Zsigmond Alföldi (27 August 1895 – 12 February 1981) was a Hungarian historian, art historian, epigraphist, numismatist and archaeologist, specializing in the Late Antique period. He was one of the most productive 20th-century scholars of the ancient world and is considered one of the leading researchers of his time. Although some of his research results are controversial, his work in several areas is viewed as groundbreaking. Professor Alföldi contributed significantly to the massive '' Cambridge Ancient History'', including Vol. 12: The Imperial Crisis and Recovery. Richard Abdy
Richard Anthony Abdy (born 1970) is a British numismatist at the British Museum, specialising in Roman coins. Biography Abdy graduated in 1992 from the University of Glasgow with a degree in History. His area of expertise is Britain in Roman times and its border fortifications, known as the Limes Britannicus. He worked on coin hoards on the Antonine Wall with Keith Rutter of the Hunter Coin Collection at the University of Glasgow. He joined the staff of the British Museum in 1993, as an assistant in the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities. In 1998 he became one of the two curators of Iron Age and Roman Empire coins in the Department of Coins and Medals. Italian Numismatic Society
The Italian Numismatic Society (''Società numismatica italiana'') is an Italian cultural association for the study of numismatics and for the promotion and spread of studies "relating to coins, tesserae, coin weights, medals and seals".
