''Now That Summer is Gone'' is a 1938 Warner Bros. ''Merrie Melodies'' cartoon directed by Frank Tashlin. The short was released on May 14, 1938. Plot All the squirrels are busy stockpiling for the forthcoming winter months knowing hard times will be ahead, as they sing the title song "Now that Summer is Gone". However, a young, flashy-dressed squirrel decides to get nuts through a dice game without making the effort to hunt them. Disregarding his father's advice not to gamble, the young squirrel pays no attention and still insists on the "easy way" on getting his nuts for winter. Before the first snowfall, the young squirrel is told to get their winter supply of nuts from the First Nutional icBank, and just before he leaves the front door, his father reminds him, "And remember, no gambling!" But on his way home with the nuts, the young squirrel sees a stranger who offers him a game of chance, and despite his father's warning, the foolish young squirrel quickly jumps at the chance. ... Frank Tashlin
Frank Tashlin (born Francis Fredrick von Taschlein, February 19, 1913 – May 5, 1972), also known as Tish Tash and Frank Tash, was an American animator, cartoonist, children's writer, illustrator, screenwriter, and film director. He was best known for his work on the ''Looney Tunes'' and ''Merrie Melodies'' series of animated shorts for Warner Bros., as well as his work as a director of live-action comedy films. Animator and brief career as cartoonist Born in Weehawken, New Jersey, Tashlin drifted from job to job after dropping out of high school in New Jersey at age 13. In 1930, he began working for John Foster as a cartoonist on the ''Aesop's Fables'' cartoon series, then worked briefly for Amadee J. Iris Shot
An iris shot is a technique used in silent film and television sometimes to emphasize a detail of a scene above all others, more commonly to end or open a scene. The film camera's iris is slowly closed or opened, so that what is visible on film appears in a decreasing or increasing circle, surrounded by black. The iris shot used at the start of a scene is an iris in and an iris out is used at the end of a film/episode or a particular scene. ''Iris in'' is also used after a previous ''iris out'' to allow different episodes or scenes to begin in a more natural way. Iris shots are also used to put emphasis on a particular aspect of film, usually something of importance. ''The Golden Age of Looney Tunes'' is a collection of LaserDiscs released by MGM/UA Home Video in the 1990s. There were five sets made, featuring a number of discs, and each disc side represented a different theme, being made up of seven cartoons per side. The first volume was also released on VHS, with each tape representing one disc side. Like many other ''Looney Tunes'' home video releases by MGM/UA Home Video, Volumes 1-4 used faded 35 mm Associated Artists Productions (a.a.p.) television prints as MGM/UA and Turner Entertainment, owners of the rights to the shorts, at the time had no access to Warner Bros.' negatives. Robert Porter McKimson Sr. (October 13, 1910 – September 29, 1977) was an American animator and illustrator, best known for his work on the ''Looney Tunes'' and ''Merrie Melodies'' series of cartoons from Warner Bros.
