Carl Ludwig Blume
Charles Ludwig de Blume or Karl Ludwig von Blume (9 June 1796, Braunschweig – 3 February 1862, Leiden) was a Germany, German-Netherlands, Dutch botanist. He was born at Braunschweig in Germany, but studied at Leiden University and spent his professional life working in the Dutch East Indies and in the Netherlands, where he was Director of the Rijksherbarium (state herbarium) at Leiden. His name is sometimes given in the Dutch language form Karel Lodewijk Blume, but the original German language, German spelling is the one most widely used in botanical texts: even then there is confusion, as he is sometimes referred to as K.L. Blume (from Karl). He carried out extensive studies of the flora (plants), flora of southern Asia, particularly in Java (island), Java, then a colony of the Netherlands. ''Nothaphoebe umbelliflora'' is an evergreen tropical tree in the family Lauraceae. Its common name in English is the bong tree. It is also called the yang bong tree (Thai), or gemor. Taxonomy The bong tree was described and named by Carl Ludwig von Blume in 1851. Blume spent much of his professional life studying the flora of the Dutch East Indies. The Latin binomial was created from Greek ''nothos'', meaning false; ''phoebe'', referring to the close resemblance to the genus Phoebe; and Latin ''umbellatus'', referring to the tree's flowers that form an umbel, i.e., the flower stalks all arise from the same point. Dr. André Joseph Guillaume Henri 'Dok' Kostermans (Purworejo, 1 July 1906 – Jakarta, 10 July 1994) was an Native Indonesians, Indonesian botanist of Dutch people, Dutch ancestry. He was born in Purworejo, Java (island), Java, Dutch East Indies, and educated at Utrecht University, taking his doctoral degree in 1936 with a paper on Surinam (Dutch colony), Surinamese Lauraceae. He spent most of his professional life studying the plants of southeastern Asia, settled at Buitenzorg, later Bogor, Indonesia. At an early stage in his career he also contributed a number of family treatments to August Adriaan Pulle, Pulle's ''Flora of Suriname''. Kostermans was especially interested in Lauraceae, Malvales (Bombacaceae and Sterculiaceae), and Dipterocarpaceae. In later years he turned his attention to Asian Anacardiaceae. The Lesser Sunda Islands or nowadays known as Nusa Tenggara Islands ( id, Kepulauan Nusa Tenggara, formerly ) are an archipelago in Maritime Southeast Asia, north of Australia. Together with the Greater Sunda Islands to the west they make up the Sunda Islands. The islands are part of a volcanic arc, the Sunda Arc, formed by subduction along the Sunda Trench in the Java Sea. A bit more than 20 million people live on the islands.
