Norwegian Pharmacy Museum
The Norwegian Pharmacy Museum (''Norsk Farmasihistorisk Museum'') is located on Bygdøy in Oslo, Norway. It is operated in cooperation with the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History. The Norwegian Pharmacy Museum was established in 1963 and opened in 1974. The purpose of the museum is to preserve pharmaceutical history. It exhibits items, inventory and literature collected from throughout Norway. The collection holds more than 19,000 items. The pharmacy museum is housed in a former private residence (''Generalitetsgården'') from Oslo, Christiania dating to 1714. The house was demolished in 1918 and subsequently rebuilt at the Norwegian Folk Museum at Bygdøy. While the corner rooms in the first and second floor have been preserved from the original building, a public area from Apoteket Hjorten in Oslo has also been reconstructed in the building, illustrating an urban pharmacy from the 1860s. Bygdøy
Bygdøy or Bygdø is a peninsula situated on the western side of Oslo, Norway. Administratively, Bygdøy belongs to the borough of Frogner; historically Bygdøy was part of Aker Municipality and became part of Oslo in 1948. Bygdøy is a popular recreation area and is among the most fashionable residential areas in Norway, where the most expensive properties in the entire country are found. Bygdøy is also the home of five national museums as well as a royal estate. Norsk Folkemuseum (Norwegian Museum of Cultural History), at Bygdøy, Oslo, Norway, is a museum of cultural history with extensive collections of artifacts from all social groups and all regions of the country. It also incorporates a large open-air museum with more than 150 buildings, relocated from towns and rural districts. Apoteket Hjorten
Apoteket Hjorten (English: ''Pharmacy Hjorten'') was a pharmacy located at Grønland in Oslo, Norway. The name "Apoteket Hjorten" is used for a number of pharmacies in several Norwegian cities such as Fredrikstad and Trondheim. The pharmacy is now renamed to ''Vitusapotek Hjorten'', and the modern building is located in Smalgangen 5. The pharmacy opened in 1857 after it was determined by a royal decree on December 4, 1856. Apoteket Hjorten was the fifth pharmacy in Christiania. After a fire in year 1859 in which 18 people died, a new pharmacy building was built. The construction of this building, which was designed by Chr. H. Grosch, finished in 1861.
