Norwegian Bar Association
The Norwegian Bar Association () is an association of Norwegian lawyers. It was established in 1908 as , and assumed its current name from 1965. As of 2008 the association had about 7,000 members. Among its publications are the journals '' Norsk Retstidende'' and '' Rettens Gang''. Leaders As of 2018, the association is chaired by Jens Johan Hjort, while Merete Smith has been secretary-general since 2003. Norsk Retstidende
''Norsk Retstidende'' (Rt.) was a periodical published by the Norwegian Bar Association. It was in circulation between 1836 and 2015. From 2016 it became an online-only publication. History and profile The journal was established in 1836, and had its current name since 1909. ''Norsk Retstidende'' published judgements of the Supreme Court of Norway, and rulings of the Appeals Selection Committee. In 1871, it was merged with the Norwegian Lawyers' Association's magazine entitled ''Ugeblad for Lovkyndighed, Statistik og Statsøkonomi''. In 1908, the Norwegian Bar and Lawyers' Association took over the publishing and distribution rights of ''Norsk Retstidende''. The ''Great Norwegian Encyclopedia'' (, abbreviated ''SNL'') is a Norwegian-language online encyclopedia. It has several subdivisions, including the Norsk biografisk leksikon. The online encyclopedia is among the most-read Norwegian published sites, with up to 3.5 million unique visitors per month. Paper editions (1978–2007) The ''SNL'' was created in 1978, when the two publishing houses Aschehoug and Gyldendal merged their encyclopedias and created the company Kunnskapsforlaget. Up until 1978 the two publishing houses of Aschehoug and Gyldendal, Norway's two largest, had published ' and ', respectively. The respective first editions were published in 1906–1913 (Aschehoug) and 1933–1934 (Gyldendal). Valentin Voss
Valentin Voss (27 August 1880 – 23 June 1964) was a Norwegian lawyer and civil servant. He took the cand.jur. degree in 1903 and the lawyer's license in 1909. From 1922 to 1930 he was the State Conciliator of Norway. From 1927 he was also a defender in Eidsivating Court of Appeal. From 1939 to 1941 he served as the Attorney General of Norway. He was involved in the whaling industry as chairman of several companies. He was decorated as a Commander with Star of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav. He died in June 1964 and was buried at Vestre gravlund. Henning Bødtker
Henning Bremer Bødtker (14 August 1891 – 19 November 1975) was a Norwegian jurist and civil servant. He was the Attorney General of Norway from 1945 to 1962. Personal life He was born in Svelvik as a son of ship captain Jacob Bødtker (1847–1923) and Hilda Tofte (1853–1943). He is a second cousin of professor Adam Trampe Bødtker. In 1922 he married Swedish citizen Dagmar von Sydow. Their daughter who was also named Dagmar married landowner and politician Carl Oscar Collett. Career He finished his secondary education in 1909 and graduated from the Royal Frederick University with the cand.jur. degree in 1913. He was a law clerk and junior solicitor from 1914 to 1918, and also chaired the Norwegian Students' Society in 1916. From 1919 he was a practising lawyer in Oslo. Sven Arntzen
Sven Arntzen (4 April 1897 – 27 November 1976) was a Norwegian barrister. He was also the acting director general of the Norwegian Prosecuting Authority from 1945 to 1946, and played an important role in the legal purge in Norway after World War II. Pre-war life He was born in Kristiania as the son of banker Per Arntzen (1864–1924) and his wife Aasta Høst (1869–1945), and was the brother of Ole Arntzen. He was a distant descendant of Andreas Arntzen. He took the cand.jur. degree with excellent grades in 1920, and then worked as a deputy judge. From 1922 to 1924 he studied in France. He then settled in Kristiania/Oslo as a lawyer, and gained access to Supreme Court cases in 1927. Jens Christian Mellbye
Jens Christian Mellbye (4 February 1914 – 31 March 1993) was a Norwegian judge. He served as a Supreme Court Justice from 1968 to 1992. He was born in Oslo as a son of barrister Gunnar Lange Mellbye (1884–1958) and Aagot Maartmann-Moe (1888–1980). He was a brother of Fredrik Mellbye, grandson of Christian Mellbye and first cousin once removed of Johan E. Mellbye. He finished his secondary education at Ris in 1931 and attended the Norwegian Military Academy from 1931 to 1932. He gradually advanced to Captain. In 1938 he took the cand.jur. degree. He was a deputy judge in Skien District Court before being hired as junior solicitor in his father's law firm. He was a barrister with access to working with Supreme Court cases from 1946. Hans Stenberg-Nilsen
Hans Stenberg-Nilsen (19 December 1930 – 14 January 2025) was a Norwegian jurist and Supreme Court attorney. Life and career Stenberg-Nilsen was born in Oslo on 19 December 1930. Berit Reiss-Andersen
Berit Reiss-Andersen (born 11 July 1954) is a Norwegian lawyer, author and former politician for the Norwegian Labour Party. She is a member of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, the 5-member committee that awards the Nobel Peace Prize. She is also a board member of the Nobel Foundation, which has the overall responsibility for all the five Nobel Prizes. She served as state secretary for the Minister of Justice and Police from 1996 to 1997 and as president of the Norwegian Bar Association from 2008 to 2012.
