Northwest Unitarian Universalist Congregation
Northwest Unitarian Universalist Congregation (Northwest) was organized in 1969. The organization of Northwest was the result of action taken by the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Atlanta (UUCA) to establish a new congregation in the northwest suburbs of Atlanta. Sunday services and religious education programs were initially held in rented spaces. In 1976 the congregation moved to its newly constructed facility on a five-acre wooded lot in Sandy Springs, Georgia. In 1987, an additional building called the Chalice House was built to support the congregation's religious education program. In 2000, Northwest was designated as a Welcoming Congregation ensuring that the LGBTQ community could find a spiritual home at Northwest. Unitarian Universalist Association
Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) is a liberal religious association of Unitarian Universalism, Unitarian Universalist congregations. It was formed in 1961 by the consolidation of the American Unitarian Association and the Universalist Church of America, respectively. However, modern Unitarian Universalists see themselves as a separate religion with its own beliefs and affinities. They define themselves as non-creedal, and draw wisdom from various religions and philosophies, including humanism, pantheism, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Judaism, Islam, and Modern Paganism, Earth-centered spirituality. Thus, the UUA is a religious group with liberal leanings. In the United States, Unitarian Universalism grew by 15.8% between 2000 and 2010 to include 211,000 adherents nationwide. Sandy Springs is a city in northern Fulton County, Georgia, United States, and a suburb of Atlanta. The city's population was 108,080 at the 2020 census, making it Georgia's 7th most populous city. George Leonard Chaney
George Leonard Chaney (1836-1922) was a Boston Unitarian minister who served the city's Hollis Street Church for 15 years. In 1882, at the American Unitarian Association, American Unitarian Association's (A.U.A.) request, he moved to Atlanta to organize the first Unitarian church in that city. As the A.U.A. Southern Superintendent, he was a leader in expanding Unitarianism across the South. He later moved to Richmond, Virginia and established another Unitarian church. In 1895, he retired from his superintendent and ministerial duties and returned to Massachusetts.
