Northwest Georgia Regional Library System
The Northwest Georgia Regional Library System (NGRL) is a public library system across the Northwest Georgia counties of Gordon, Murray, and Whitfield. NRGL participates in PINES, a public library network of 281 libraries in 140 counties throughout Georgia. Any resident of Georgia may receive a PINES library card which allows them access to any of the 8 million books in its collection across the state. The system is also a member of GALILEO, an online database for Georgian residents consisting over 100 databases on a wide variety of topics. History The first library constructed in the Northwest Georgia Regional Library System was the Calhoun-Gordon library which was constructed through efforts of the Calhoun Woman's Club in 1904. Northwest Georgia is a region of the state of Georgia in the United States. It includes 12 counties (listed in the section below), which at the 2010 census had a combined population of 753,032. Northwest Georgia includes some of the southernmost portions of the Appalachian mountains, as opposed to Northeast Georgia, which holds the southernmost Blue Ridge, known locally as the North Georgia Mountains. Bartow, Floyd, Haralson, Paulding, and Polk Counties are located on the outer northern fringe of the Atlanta metropolitan area, while the other counties are part of the Chattanooga, Tennessee metropolitan area. Gordon County is a county located in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 55,186. The county seat is Calhoun. Gordon County comprises the Calhoun, GA Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the Atlanta- Athens-Clarke County-Sandy Springs, GA Combined Statistical Area. Murray County is a county located in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 39,973. The county seat is Chatsworth. Whitfield County is a county located in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census shows a population of 102,599. The county seat is Dalton. The county was created on December 30, 1851, and named after George Whitefield, Methodist evangelist. The "''e''" was omitted to reflect the pronunciation of his name. Public Information Network For Electronic Services
The Public Information Network for Electronic Services (or PINES) is the nearly statewide library consortium and its online library catalog of the Georgia Public Library Service. By June 2017, the catalog consisted of books from 284 library facilities in 143 counties across the U.S. state of Georgia with a collection size of 10.6 million items, all of which are searchable by anyone with a PINES library card which can be obtained free of charge from any PINES-participating library. The PINES system effectively turns most of the state of Georgia into one huge library. PINES cardholders are able to request an interlibrary loan from any affiliated library, and the single statewide library card grants access to the hundreds of branches associated with the service. Catoosa County is a county located in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 67,872. The county seat is Ringgold. The Bartow County Library System (BCLS) is the public library system of Bartow County, Georgia, United States. It consists of three branches serving a population of 103,000 people. Sequoyah Regional Library System
The Sequoyah Regional Library System (SRLS) is a library system serving three counties in North Georgia: Cherokee, Pickens, and Gilmer. Funding is provided by the cities and counties in Cherokee and Pickens, and by the board of education in Gilmer. The system is named for Sequoyah, a native Cherokee man who invented the Cherokee alphabet in the 19th century, so that the spoken Cherokee language could be written. History The first city library was established in 1923 when members of the Canton Woman's Club donated a collection of books to be available to the public. Sara Hightower Regional Library System
The Sara Hightower Regional Library System (SHRLS) is a system of 6 public libraries in the Northwest Georgia region serving Chattooga County, Polk County and Floyd County. The headquarters of the library system is located in Rome, Georgia, at the Rome-Floyd County Library. Patrons of the library receive a PINES library card. This card may be used at any of the 275 libraries affiliated with the program across Georgia, as well as the 6 branches in the Sara Hightower Regional Library System, and is open to all Georgia residents.
