Northline Commons
Northline Mall was a shopping mall in the Northline area of Houston, Texas, United States, at the northeast corner of Interstate 45, and Crosstimbers Road. It is the new location of Northline Commons. History Boston, Massachusetts-based Berenson Associates Inc. developed the mall in the 1960s. Northline Mall opened in 1963 as one of Houston's first premier weather-controlled malls. On January 31, 1997, a 20-foot wall on the south end of Northline Mall, where the former Joske's building was being demolished to make way for the incoming Magic Johnson Theatres cinema, collapsed, killing three people. Beginning in the 2000s Northline Mall was redeveloped from a traditional mall to an open air "power center" consisting of " big box" retail and general merchandise stores. Magic Johnson Theatres
Magic Johnson Theatres is a chain of movie theaters, originally developed in 1994 by Johnson Development Corporation, the business holding of former basketball player Magic Johnson, and Sony Pictures Entertainment through a partnership with Sony-Loews Theatres. A 1998 merger between Sony-Loews and Cineplex Odeon Corporation caused them to become part of the new Loews Cineplex Entertainment Corp. Magic Johnson worked with Lawrence Ruisi, President and CEO of Loews Cineplex Entertainment, during the planning and development of these theaters. Currently the chain's former locations are owned by AMC Theatres, after Sony-Loews was acquired by that company in 2006. Joske's
Joske's, founded by German immigrant Julius Joske in 1867, was a department store chain originally based in San Antonio, Texas, San Antonio, Texas. In December 1928, Hahn Department Stores acquired the company along with the Titche-Goettinger department store of Dallas, Texas, Dallas, and three years later Hahn became part of Allied Stores. Allied was taken over by Campeau Corporation, Campeau in 1986, and Campeau in turn sold the Joske's chain in 1987 to Dillard's. All Joske's stores were then quickly converted into Dillard's locations. Origins Joske's first store, located on Main Plaza in San Antonio and known as J. Joske, opened in 1867 and operated until 1873, when Joske sold it and went back to Berlin for his family.
