Northern Transvaal Command
Northern Transvaal Command was a command of the South African Army. It was active from 1959 to mid 2000 when it was disestablished. Formerly it was named Northern Command from 1946 to 1959. History Origins Union Defence Force Military Districts The command's origins may date to the formations of Military districts, No 5 and 6 in 1926, which then became Transvaal Command in 1934. Eastern Transvaal
Mpumalanga () is a province of South Africa. The name means "East", or literally "The Place Where the Sun Rises" in the Swazi, Xhosa, Ndebele and Zulu languages. Mpumalanga lies in eastern South Africa, bordering Eswatini and Mozambique. It constitutes 6.5% of South Africa's land area. Munitoria Commando
Munitoria Commando was a light infantry regiment of the South African Army. It formed part of the South African Army Infantry Formation as well as the South African Territorial Reserve. History Origin Munitoria Commando was originally affiliated to Hercules Commando an industrial commando. Operations With the SADF The unit remained a company-sized unit and was housed within the lines of Hercules Commando under command of Group 15. By 1983 the unit was given authority to become a fully fledged unit in its own right and it assumed the role of a reaction unit for the Northern Transvaal Command. Hillcrest Commando
Hillcrest Commando was a light infantry regiment of the South African Army. It formed part of the South African Army Infantry Formation as well as the South African Territorial Reserve. Hillcrest was a Commando from 1962 to 1983 and was the first English commando in Pretoria. Hillcrest was however a Regiment from 1983 to 2003. Origin Hillcrest's two tailed lion Hillcrest was an exclusive English speaking unit, but on the Minister of Defense's persistence that they should speak both official languages it was decided to " instead of one tail, our lion will have two tails as the Minister insisted". Hercules Commando was a light infantry regiment of the South African Army. It formed part of the South African Army Infantry Formation as well as the South African Territorial Reserve. History Origin This unit was initially established as the Pretoria North West Rifle Association in 1923. Operations With the UDF By 1925, the name was changed to the Pretoria Moot Rifle Association. Rifle Association s were however disbanded with the outbreak of WW2. By 1948, skietkommandos were established and Hercules Commando was initially based in the Pretoria suburb of Hercules. The South African Defence Force (SADF) ( Afrikaans: ''Suid-Afrikaanse Weermag'') comprised the armed forces of South Africa from 1957 until 1994. Georg Meiring
General Georg Meiring (born 18 October 1939) is a South African military commander. He served as Chief of the Army (1990–93) and Chief of the South African National Defence Force (1993–98). Military career After obtaining a Master of Science in Physics from the University of the Orange Free State, Meiring joined the South African Army as a signals officer in 1962 and, in 1980, became Director of Signals of the South African Army. Meiring served as Deputy Chief of the Army from 1982 to 1983 and as General Officer Commanding (GOC) South West Africa Territorial Force from 1983 to 1987. Charles Lloyd (South Africa)
Lieutenant General Charles Lloyd was a General Officer in the South African Army. He died on 20 December 2014. Early life Military career General Lloyd commanded the South West African Territorial Force in the 1980s. He was a major proponent of the "Winning the Hearts and Minds" (WHAM) strategy of counter-insurgency. He was also a key part of the development of the National Security Management System (NSMS) under Prime Minister P.W. Botha and served as secretary of the State Security Council from 1988 to 1990. He stated that the NSMS was concerned with three areas: the government, (for self-criticism and the correction of short comings), the enemy (to "command, coerce and eliminate") and the masses (whose support had to be won through communication and education).
