Northern Football Club
Northern Football Club are a rugby union club that was founded in 1875, and is based in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne. Their strip is coloured navy blue, red and white. They currently play in Regional 2 North, the sixth tier of the English rugby union system, having been promoted from Durham Northumberland One at the end of the 2021–22 season. The Northumberland Rugby Union is the sports governing body, governing body for rugby union in the historic county of Northumberland, England and one of the constituent bodies of the national Rugby Football Union having been formed in 1880. Brian Keen
Brian Warwick Keen (born 1 June 1944) is an English former international rugby union player. Keen was born in Bury St Edmunds and attended The Thomas Hardye School. While a fourth-year student at Newcastle University, Keen was capped four times for England across the 1968 Five Nations, as a loose-head prop. He also represented Northumberland. Keen had several seasons with Moseley, then had to step away from rugby for two years due to business commitments, with his work taking him to Brazil. He returned to the sport in 1972 to play for Newcastle club Northern and later competed with Bedford, winning a RFU Knockout Cup title in 1974–75. North 1 East
North 1 East was a sixth tier league in the English rugby union domestic competition, formed in 1987 using the name North Division 2, involving clubs from the north of the country. There was also a division known as North East 1 that began in 1987 for clubs based in the north-east but this was a seventh (later eighth) tier league. North Division 2 would later split into two regional divisions, known as North 1 East and North 1 West. North 1 East was made up of teams from around the North East and Yorkshire, playing home and away matches throughout a winter season. The league champions were automatically promoted to the North Premier, whilst the second placed team entered into a play-off match with the second placed team in the equivalent Division North 1 West. Northumberland Senior Cup Rugby Union
The Northumberland Senior Cup is an annual rugby union competition held between the clubs of the Northumberland RFU which was first played in 1882. It is the senior county cup for the Northumberland Rugby Union, which includes Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, and Northumberland. The current holders are Alnwick who defeated Northern 28-23 in the 2025 cup final. Most finals were held at the Northumberland County Ground from 1912 up until 1988; before and after the County Ground's existence Senior Cup Finals have been played at various venues in the county. Gosforth RFC
Gosforth Rugby Football Club is a rugby union team, currently playing in Durham/Northumberland 3 following the club's relegation from Durham/Northumberland 2 at the end of the 2019-20 season. The club was originally established in 1877, however in 1996 the club split in two. One half, Newcastle Gosforth (now Newcastle Falcons) went on to become the first ever professional rugby union club. Newcastle Falcons have been one of the most successful clubs in Northern England with 1 Premiership and 4 domestic cups to their name. The amateur Gosforth club was founded in the split. John Elders
John Elders (18 December 1930 – 3 May 2015) was an English rugby union player and coach. He played with Leicester Tigers between 1953 and 1958, scoring the third most tries in the 1950s for his club (38). Elders was also club captain for a number of seasons. Elders coached the England team between 1972 and 1974. He guided England to their first ever away win against New Zealand, and also coached England through an unbeaten tour of South Africa. Elders played one game for Barbarian FC in the late 1950s. Elders was the sports master at the Newcastle Royal Grammar School between 1957 and 1982. Whilst teaching there he played and coached for Northern FC and (Old) Novocastrians. He joined Old Novocastrians whilst a teacher at the Newcastle Royal Grammar School and was always an advocate for the club, helping bring many players to the club in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. Hendrik Pieter "Hennie" le Roux (born 10 July 1967), is a former South African rugby union player who played for the South Africa national rugby union team. He was the founder and president of the players' union, which was founded in 1997 and received the contribution to rugby award in 2000. Career Provincial Le Roux represented the schools' team at the 1986 Craven Week tournament and in 1987 he played for the Eastern Province under–20 team. In 1990 he made his senior provincial debut for Eastern Province and in 1992 he moved to . Rory David Best (born 15 August 1982) is an Irish former rugby union player who was the captain of the Ireland national team from 2016 to 2019. He played hooker for Ulster and was registered for Banbridge RFC. Best earned 124 caps for Ireland, making his debut in 2005 and retiring at the end of the 2019 Rugby World Cup, his fourth World Cup. Jim Pollock (born 16 November 1958 in Newcastle) is a Scottish former international rugby union player. His nickname was "Lucky Jim". Jim played eight games for Scotland between 1982 and 1985. Famously scoring on his debut against Wales, at Cardiff Arms Park where Scotland hadn't won in 20 years.
