Northam Traincare Facility
Northam Traincare Facility, also known as Northam Carriage Servicing Depot, is an electric traction maintenance depot in the suburb of Northam in Southampton, England. The depot is situated on the South West Main Line and is south of St Denys station at Northam Junction. Two tracks on the formation of the branch to the Eastern Docks are used as the depot headshunt and extra berthing sidings. It is the principal maintenance facility for the Class 444 and 450s operated by South Western Railway. History The depot was opened in 2003 and was the first of Siemens' purpose-built depots in the UK. British Rail Class 444
The British Rail Class 444 ''Desiro'' is an electric multiple-unit passenger train built by Siemens Transportation Systems in Austria between 2002 and 2004. The Class 444 currently operate on express passenger services for South Western Railway. The class first entered service with South West Trains in 2004. Description At the start of the 21st century, as part of its franchise agreement, South West Trains was required to replace the slam-door rolling stock of Classes 411, 412, 421 and 423, which did not meet modern health and safety standards, with new trains by 2005. In April 2001 an order was placed with Siemens for 785 vehicles. Northam, Southampton
Northam is a suburb of Southampton in Hampshire. On the West bank of the River Itchen, it shares borders with St Mary's, Bitterne and Bevois Valley. Beside the border with St Mary's is the Chapel area, which has been home to some recent apartment building developments in Northam. St Denys railway station serves the St Denys and Portswood suburbs of Southampton in Hampshire, England. It is down the line from .
