North Carolina World War II Army Airfields
During World War II, the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) established numerous airfields in North Carolina for antisubmarine defense in the Atlantic Ocean and for training pilots and aircrews of USAAF fighters and bombers. Most of these airfields were under the command of Third Air Force or the Army Air Forces Training Command (AAFTC). However Troop Carrier Command and Air Technical Service Command (ATSC) commanded several other airfields in a support role. It is still possible to find remnants of these wartime airfields. Many were converted into municipal airports, some were returned to agriculture and several were retained as United States Air Force installations and were front-line bases during the Cold War. Hundreds of the temporary buildings that were used survive today, and are being used for other purposes. Smith Reynolds Airport
Smith Reynolds Airport is a public airport 3 miles (5 km) northeast of Winston-Salem in Forsyth County, North Carolina. The airport has two runways, and is used for general aviation and flight training. There are currently no scheduled passenger airline flights (these are handled locally by the Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro). Smith Reynolds was once home to the Winston-Salem air show, usually held in September, which drew about 20,000 spectators. There has not been an airshow since 2015. The airport has multiple flight schools and maintenance facilities. Smith Reynolds also has an operational control tower that operates from 6:00 AM to 9:30 PM year-round. Piedmont Triad International Airport (; commonly referred to locally as "PTI") is an airport located in unincorporated Guilford County, North Carolina, west of Greensboro, serving the Piedmont Triad region of Greensboro, High Point and Winston-Salem in North Carolina, United States. The airport, located just off Bryan Boulevard, sits on a 3,770 acre (1,526 ha) campus and has three runways. It is the third busiest airport in North Carolina in terms of airplane movements, averaging 280 takeoffs and landings each day. Hendersonville, North Carolina
Hendersonville is a city in and the county seat of Henderson County, North Carolina, United States, located south of Asheville, North Carolina, Asheville. Like the county, the city is named for 19th-century North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Leonard Henderson. The population was 13,137 at the 2010 United States census, 2010 census and was estimated in 2019 to be 14,157. Wilmington International Airport is a public airport located just north of Wilmington, North Carolina, in unincorporated Wrightsboro, North Carolina, Wrightsboro. ILM covers 1,800 acres (728 ha). During the calendar year of 2024, ILM served a record-high number of passengers, with 736,868 enplanements and 729,001 deplanements, totaling 1,465,869 passengers. The airport has two runways and a single terminal which has eight gate (airport), gates. The airport is also home to two fixed-base operators (FBO). Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is a United States Air Force (USAF) base located in Goldsboro, North Carolina. The base is named for U.S. Navy Lt. Seymour A. Johnson, a test pilot from Goldsboro who died in an F4F Wildcat crash near Norbeck, Maryland, on March 5, 1941. In December 1941, $168,811 was authorized for the construction of a U.S. Army Air Corps Technical Training School. Goldsboro, originally Goldsborough, is a city in and the county seat of Wayne County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 33,657 at the 2020 census.
