North Carolina Highway 214
North Carolina Highway 214 (NC 214) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of North Carolina; it is entirely in Columbus County. Route description NC 214 begins at an intersection with Business U.S. Routes US 74 Business and US 76 Business about east of Whiteville. The intersection is located just south of exit 244 on US 74/ US 76. The two-lane road heads southeast then due east through a rural area until reaching the communities of Hallsboro and Artesia. NC 214 heads north of Lake Waccamaw. Though the road never strays more than from the US 74/US 76 freeway throughout its entire length, the freeway dips south to cross the Friar Swamp/Green Swamp immediately adjacent to the lanes of NC 214. Whiteville, North Carolina
Whiteville is the county seat and the most populous city in Columbus County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,394 at the 2010 census. History Columbus County was created in 1808. In 1810, an act authorized James Bunbury White to "lay off a town on his own lands in the county of Columbus" and appointed five commissioners, Isaac Powell, John Wingate, Arthur Simpson, William Burney and Warren Baldwin, "for the purpose of laying off a town on the lands of the said James B. White, in the county aforesaid, at the place fixed on to erect the public buildings for said county; which town, when laid off by said commissioners, or a majority of them, shall be named Whitesville, and the lots thereof shall be for the sole benefit and disposal of the said James B. Bolton, North Carolina
Bolton is a town in Columbus County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 519 at the 2020 census. History Bolton was established in 1899 and named for the Bolton Lumber Company. It became an incorporated community in 1915. In 1981 undercover agents of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation were investigating corruption in Columbus County as part of the Colcor investigation. As part of their inquiry into election fraud, the agents pretended to be interest in opening a bar in Bolton. They pushed for a referendum to legalize liquor-by-the-drink in the town and paid local politician Herbert Riggins to buy votes in their favor, the first time the FBI had ever attempted to manipulate a public election. The referendum was held on April 30, 1982, with a majority of local residents in favor of legalizing liquor-by-the-drink, though Riggins mostly avoided involving himself in the vote. History Early history The area comprising Columbus County was originally inhabited by the Waccamaw people.
