North Carolina Courage
The North Carolina Courage are an American professional Association football, soccer team based in Cary, North Carolina, that competes in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). It was founded on January 9, 2017, after Stephen Malik acquired NWSL franchise rights from the Western New York Flash. The Courage plays its home games at WakeMed Soccer Park. In 2018, the Courage became the first team in NWSL history to win the NWSL Shield, Shield and the Championship in the same season. In 2019, the team became the first team to win the Championship on its home field. WakeMed Soccer Park is a Association football, soccer complex in Cary, North Carolina, United States. It consists of a purpose-built, Soccer-specific stadium, soccer-specific main stadium named "First Horizon Stadium", two lighted practice football pitches, and four additional fields. The main stadium and the two lighted fields (2 & 3) are all FIFA international regulation size (). The stadium seats 10,000, while Field 2 also has 1,000 permanent bleacher seats. The complex also sports a full-length Cross country running, cross-country course and houses the offices of North Carolina FC, Triangle Professional Soccer. Paul Riley (footballer)
Paul Riley (born 23 September 1963) is an English former football player and coach. He spent his entire professional playing career in American leagues, including the American Professional Soccer League and the USISL. He has been a coach, mostly of women's teams, since the 1990s. In 2021, he was accused of sexual misconduct and mistreatment of players that spanned over a 10-year coaching period in the National Women's Soccer League and its predecessors. In 2023, Riley was banned from the NWSL for life. Playing career Youth In 1982, Riley came to the United States to attend Adelphi University. From 1982 to 1985, he played on the Adelphi Panthers men's soccer team. In 1999, Adelphi inducted Riley into the school's Hall of Fame. 2019 Women's International Champions Cup
The 2019 International Champions Cup Women's Tournament was a tournament of friendly women's association football matches. It was the second edition of the Women's International Champions Cup and took place in Cary, North Carolina, United States, from August 15 to 18, 2019. The tournament was hosted by the defending champions, the North Carolina Courage of the National Women's Soccer League, at the 10,000-seater Sahlen's Stadium. They were joined by UEFA Women's Champions League winners Olympique Lyonnais Féminin of France, English FA Women's League Cup winners Manchester City, and Spanish Primera División winners Atlético Madrid Femenino. 2018 Women's International Champions Cup
The 2018 Women's International Champions Cup was the first edition of a series of friendly women's association football matches. It took place from July 26 to 29, 2018 in the United States. For the first time, the ICC included a women's tournament. Nearly a dozen of the regular ICC participant clubs expressed interest in sending their women's sides, but the inaugural women's tournament featured just four teams before expanding in the 2019 ICC.
