NorrlandsOperan
The NorrlandsOperan (), is a Swedish opera company in Umeå, located in Norrland, Sweden. The ownership of NorrlandsOperan is divided between the Umeå Municipality (40%) and the Västerbotten County Council (60%). NorrlandsOperan was established in 1974 as a regional opera ensemble. The NorrlandsOperan's first artistic director was Arnold Östman, from 1974 to 1979. NorrlandsOperan now has its own symphony orchestra and facilities for opera, dance, music and art as well as workshops and studios. History NorrlandsOperan was founded in 1974 as a direct result of Swedish cultural reform the same year. The musical theater group ''Sångens makt'' constituted the core of the newly formed opera ensemble. Rumon Gamba
Rumon Gamba (born 24 November 1972) is a British conductor. Biography Gamba studied music at Durham University, and then went to the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied conducting with Colin Metters, George Hurst and Sir Colin Davis. He became the first conducting student to obtain the DipRAM (the Royal Academy of Music performer's diploma). He was a 1998 prize winner in the Lloyds Bank BBC Young Musicians Conductors Workshop. In 1998, he joined the BBC Philharmonic as its Assistant Conductor, and later became Associate Conductor. He left the orchestra in 2002. Gamba was Chief Conductor and Music Director of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra from 2002 to 2010. He first conducted at NorrlandsOperan in northern Sweden in a concert of English music in 2007. Elim Chan (; born 18 November 1986) is a Hong Kong-born conductor. Biography Chan was born in Hong Kong. Birth year of 1986 is based on age 28 in Dec 2014. As a youth, she played cello and piano and sang in choirs. Chan attended the Good Hope School (Form One). Chan was a sixth-form student at Li Po Chun United World College in Hong Kong. Chan began studies at Smith College in the US with the initial intent of becoming a medical doctor. Kristjan Järvi
Kristjan Järvi (, alternate (U.S.) spelling: Kristian Järvi) (born 13 June 1972) is an Estonian conductor, composer and producer. Born in Tallinn, Estonia, he is the younger son of the conductor Neeme Järvi and brother of conductor Paavo Järvi and flutist Maarika Järvi. Early life When Järvi was age 7, his family emigrated to the United States and settled in Shrewsbury, New Jersey. He became an American citizen in 1985. He grew up in New York City. Järvi studied piano with Nina Svetlanova at the Manhattan School of Music. He later went on to study conducting at the University of Michigan under Kenneth Kiesler. Andrea Quinn
Andrea Quinn (born 22 December 1964) is an English conductor. Biography Quinn is a graduate of Nottingham University and of the Royal Academy of Music. In 1993, Quinn won the Royal Opera House's "Conduct for Dance" competition, and has since then been in great demand as a ballet conductor. Early in her career, she conducted the London Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, and Fulham Symphony Orchestra. Quinn was music director of The Royal Ballet from 1998 to 2001, the first female music director in the company's history. Quinn was music director of New York City Ballet (NYCB) from 2001 to 2006, the first female director in NYCB's history. Arnold Östman
Arnold Otto Natanael Östman (24 December 1939 – 15 August 2023) was a Swedish conductor and music director. Early life Arnold Östman was born in Malmö, Sweden. He studied art history and musicology at Lund, Paris and Stockholm. As a musician, he concentrated on the piano and the harpsichord, being largely self-taught. During his years as a researcher, he focused on the subject of early opera, bringing to light a number of theretofore unknown or little-known baroque operas. Östman was a teacher at the University College of Opera (then called the ') in 1969. La Fura dels Baus () is a Spanish theatrical group founded in 1979 in Moià, Barcelona (Spain), known for their urban theatre, use of unusual settings and blurring of the boundaries between audience and actor. "La Fura dels Baus" in Catalan means "The ferret from Els Baus" (Els Baus is a toponym from the birthplace of two of the founders, Moià). ''Lycksalighetens ö'' (The Isle of Bliss) is a Swedish-language opera in four acts by Hilding Rosenberg; the libretto by the composer, is based on the 1823 play of the same name by Per Daniel Amadeus Atterbom. Atterbom's work – his most extensive piece of writing – is based on the 1690 fairy tale "" by Madame d'Aulnoy which Atterbom follows closely, but added his own layer of allegory on enjoying bliss for its own sake. Poetry which only touches the senses, cannot satisfy nobler souls yearning for eternal life and happiness (such as King Astolf).
