Normangee
Normangee is a town in Leon County, Texas, Leon and Madison County, Texas, Madison counties in the U.S. state of Texas. Its population is 495 as of 2020. History The railroads were pushing the frontier westward and the Trinity and Brazos Valley Railway (T&BV) and the Houston and Texas Central Railway (H&TC) were built between Houston, Texas, Houston and Dallas, Texas, Dallas in 1904–1905, but the passed through Robert Rogers' land about 2 miles west of Rogers Prairie. So on January 26, 1907, S.B. Phillips filed for record a plat of the new town, Normangee, located in the southwest corner of the Robert Rogers land grant at the junction of the Old San Antonio Road and the two new railroads. When the H&TC was being built through this region, railroad officials placed a town every 8 miles. Madison County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 13,455. Its seat is Madisonville. The county was created in 1853 and organized the next year. It is named for James Madison, the fourth President of the United States. History The current Madison County Courthouse was built in 1970. It is at least the fifth courthouse to serve Madison County. Leon County, Texas
Leon County is a county in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 15,719. Its county seat is Centerville. History The legislature of the Republic of Texas authorized Leon County in 1846 from part of Robertson County, and named it in honor of Martín de León, the founder of Victoria, Texas. However, local tradition holds that it is named for a yellow wolf of the region commonly called the ''león'' ( Spanish for lion). The county was organized that same year, with its first county seat at Leona. In 1851, the county seat was moved to Centerville, since Leona was in the far southern part of the county. The 1886 Leon County Courthouse was designed by architect George Edwin Dickey of Houston, incorporating remnants of an earlier 1858 courthouse that was destroyed by fire. Old San Antonio Road
The Old San Antonio Road was a historic roadway located in the U.S. states of Texas and Louisiana. Parts of it were based on traditional Native American trails. Its Texas terminus was about southeast of Eagle Pass at the Rio Grande in Maverick County, and its northern terminus was at Natchitoches, Louisiana. The road continued from Texas through Monclova to Mexico City. The Old San Antonio Road is considered a part of El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail. Route Louisiana Highway 6 mostly runs alongside the Old San Antonio Road for the entirety of its route through that state from Natchitoches to west of Many.
