Norge is an unincorporated community in James City County, Virginia, United States. Location Norge is located on the old Richmond-Williamsburg Stage Road, which is U.S. Route 60 in modern times. Interstate 64 was built through the area in the 1970s, and passes nearby. Exit 231 is labeled "Croaker-Norge" for the two small communities nearby. History The new community of Norge was formally established beginning in 1904 in western James City County by Norwegian Americans and other Scandinavians, with persons resettling from other places in North America joined by new immigrants. Land at Norge was reasonably priced and offered rich farm land in a gentler climate than that of the northern and Midwestern states, where some of the immigrants had originally settled upon coming to America. Croaker, Virginia
Croaker is an unincorporated community in James City County, Virginia, United States on the south bank of the York River 10 miles downstream from West Point. The York River is formed from the confluence of the Mattaponi River and the Pamunkey River at West Point. The York River empties into the Chesapeake Bay about 30 miles downstream from Croaker. History The name "Croaker" is believed to have derived from the abundant quantity of Atlantic croaker (''Micropogonias undulatus''), an inshore, bottom-dwelling fish found in the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the York River. The town of Croaker was known in its early history as Taskinas Plantation, then Hollywood (due to the many holly trees). Norge Train Depot
Norge Train Depot is a historic home located at Norge, near Williamsburg, James City County, Virginia. It was built about 1907 by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway from standardized plans. The train station is the last surviving example of a wood frame "informal standard" depot in the six states that were served by Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. Originals were built according to an informal plan and no standard drawings were prepared or entered in the railway's set of design standards. It is a simple one-story wood balloon frame building, twelve bays wide on the south side, seven bays wide on the north end, and one bay deep. The building is sheathed in panels of German weatherboard and features a low hipped roof with overhanging and slightly flared eaves and boxed cornice covered with beaded board siding. The Williamsburg Soap and Candle Company, known to millions as just the "candle factory", was located in the Norge section of James City County, Virginia. The factory was famous for making quality soap and candles. At one time, the Williamsburg Candle Soap and Candle Co. was a major supplier of candles around the world both under their label as well as private label candles for companies such as Estee Lauder, Pottery Barn and others. They were known for their fine quality candles that were dripless and clean burning. Home Demonstration Clubs
Home Demonstration Clubs (also known as homemaker clubs, home bureaus or home adviser groups) were a program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Cooperative Extension Service. Their goal was to teach farm women in rural America better methods for getting their work done, in areas such as gardening, canning, nutrition, and sewing, and to encourage them to improve their families' living conditions. Home demonstration agents worked with local clubs to provide teaching services. The clubs also took on other education and charitable roles. These clubs survive into the present day. About Home demonstration clubs were an extension of Progressive Era values. The clubs were meant to help improve the lives of women living in rural areas.
