1949 Manitoba General Election
The 1949 Manitoba general election was held on November 10, 1949, to elect Members of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Manitoba, Canada. This election pitted the province's coalition government, made up of the Liberal-Progressive Party and the Progressive Conservative Party, against a variety of opponents. The social democratic Manitoba Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) was the coalition's primary challenger, while the communist Labour Progressive Party and an assortment of independent candidates also challenged the coalition in some constituencies. Liberal-Progressive and Progressive Conservative candidates ran against each other in some ridings, generally where no anti-coalition candidates had a serious chance of winning. The result was a landslide victory for the coalition. Norfolk ( ) is a ceremonial county in England, located in East Anglia and officially part of the East of England region. It borders Lincolnshire and The Wash to the north-west, the North Sea to the north and east, Cambridgeshire to the west, and Suffolk to the south. The largest settlement is the city of Norwich. The county has an area of and a population of 859,400. 1958 Manitoba General Election
The 1958 Manitoba general election was held on June 16, 1958 to elect Members of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Manitoba, Canada. The election resulted in a minority victory for the Progressive Conservative Party under the leadership of Dufferin Roblin. This election was the first in Manitoba after a comprehensive electoral redistribution in 1956. The redistribution saw the city of Winnipeg abandon its three four-member districts. St. Boniface also was broken up into two single-member districts. The old Winnipeg, St. Boniface and two suburban districts were made into 20 single-member constituencies altogether, to give the City of Winnipeg increased representation in the legislature. Elections hereafter used FPTP. As well the other districts in the province had dropped the Alternative Voting system and simply used the plurality first past the post system from here on. Samuel Burch
Samuel Edward Burch (August 1, 1889 – March 4, 1974) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba as a Liberal-Progressive from 1949 to 1958. The son of L. R. Burch and Jane Ann McRae, Burch was born in Carberry and educated at Brucefield School in Manitoba. He was first elected to the Manitoba legislature in the 1949 election in the constituency of Norfolk—Beautiful Plains, defeating his Progressive Conservative opponent by 633 votes. He was re-elected by a greater margin in the 1953 provincial election. Burch served as a backbench supporter of Douglas Campbell's government during his time in the legislature. He was married twice: first to Agnes Mabel Mann in 1912 and then to Lavina Jane Campbell in 1934.
