The Norfolk Island Liberal Party ( pih, Norfuk Ailen Librel Paati), more commonly referred to simply as the Norfolk Liberals ( pih, Norfuk Librels), is the Norfolk Island wing of the Liberal Party of Australia. It currently operates as the "Norfolk Island Interest Branch" of the Canberra Liberals. Liberal Conservatism
Liberal conservatism is a political ideology combining conservative policies with liberal stances, especially on economic issues but also on social and ethical matters, representing a brand of political conservatism strongly influenced by liberalism. Centre-right politics lean to the right of the political spectrum, but are closer to the centre. The Liberal Party of Australia is a centre-right political party in Australia, one of the two major parties in Australian politics, along with the centre-left Australian Labor Party. It was founded in 1944 as the successor to the United Australia Party and has since become the most successful political party in Australia's history. The Liberal Party of Australia (Australian Capital Territory Division), branded as Canberra Liberals, is the division of the Liberal Party of Australia in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). 2016 Norfolk Island Local Election
The 2016 Norfolk Island local election was held on 28 May 2016 to elect the Norfolk Island Regional Council, the local government body of Norfolk Island. This was the first election for the council since the Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly was abolished in 2015 as part of the removal of Norfolk Island's semi-self-governing status. Following the election, Robin Adams was elected mayor through a vote of councillors at the formal establishment of the council on 1 July 2016. Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly
The Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly was the prime legislative body of Norfolk Island from 1979 to 2015. Formed after the Norfolk Island Act 1979 was passed in the Australian parliament, its first members were elected on 10 August 1979. The last assembly was the 14th, elected on 13 March 2013. On 17 June 2015, the Australian government abolished the assembly, ending self-government on the island. Norfolk Island Regional Council, a local government body instituted under New South Wales law and with significantly-restricted powers, was established in July 2016 to perform local-level governance on the island. 2015 Norfolk Island Status Referendum
A referendum was held in Norfolk Island on 8 May 2015, asking residents if they should have a say in determining the island's political status. The referendum was successful, although the result was non-binding. The vote was initiated by the Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly after it was announced on 19 March 2015 that self-governance for the island would be revoked by the Commonwealth and replaced by a local council, with the state of New South Wales providing services to the island. Both the Norfolk Island Labor Party and Norfolk Liberals supported a "no" vote. Dave Porter (Norfolk Islander Politician)
David Raymond Porter (born 2 October 1954) is a Norfolk Islander former politician. He was a member of the Norfolk Island Regional Council before it was dismissed in 2021, and prior to that, a member of the Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly before it was disbanded. He is a senior member of the Norfolk Liberals. Political career Porter was elected to the Legislative Assembly at the 2013 election, running alongside Ian Anderson as Liberal candidates. Following the disbandment of the Legislative Assembly, Porter ran in the inaugural Regional Council election in 2016. He was successful, being the third of five candidates declared elected having received 15.61% of the vote. 2020 Norfolk Island Local Election
The 2020 Norfolk Island local election was scheduled to be held on 14 November 2020 to elect the Norfolk Island Regional Council, the local government body of Norfolk Island. It was later postponed until March 2021, however the council was suspended in February 2021 and eventually dismissed later that year. The election was to have been conducted by the Australian Election Company. Background Following the disbandment of the Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly in 2015, elections were held in line with the local government elections in the state of New South Wales. As such, the postponment of the 2020 New South Wales local elections also affected Norfolk Island. The election was then scheduled to be held in March 2021.
