Noonan–Estevan Highway Border Crossing
The Noonan–Estevan Highway Border Crossing connects the cities of Noonan, North Dakota and Estevan, Saskatchewan on the Canada–US border. North Dakota Highway 40 on the American side joins Saskatchewan Highway 47 on the Canadian side. Canadian side The customs office, established in 1913, was housed in the Public Building about north of the border. The office operated under the administrative oversight of the Port of North Portal. A facility was not constructed at the border until 1937. The status was upgraded to Port of Estevan in 1950. Canada built its double-canopy border station in 1972. A rebuild plan issued in 2017 has yet to be finalized. In 2020, the hours changed from being 8am to 9pm (summer) and 9am to 10pm (winter) to 8am to 4pm (summer) and mirroring the US winter hours. Noonan, North Dakota
Noonan is a city in Divide County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 137 at the 2020 census. Noonan was founded in 1907 and named after a family that had business, farm, and coal interests in the area. It was once known as "The White City" because of an ordinance requiring all buildings to be painted white. It is the birthplace of Gerald W. VandeWalle, who served a record-longest 45 years on the North Dakota Supreme Court beginning in 1978, including 26 years as its Chief Justice, from 1993 to 2019. Estevan is the eleventh-largest city in Saskatchewan, Canada. It is approximately north of the Canada–United States border. The Souris River runs by the city. This city is surrounded by the Rural Municipality of Estevan No. 5. History The first settlers in what was to become Estevan arrived in 1892, along with the expansion of the Canadian Pacific Railway. North Dakota Highway 40
North Dakota Highway 40 (ND 40) is a north–south highway located in northwestern North Dakota. The route traverses an area from US Highway 2 (US 2) near Tioga, in eastern Williams County, to the Canadian border where it continues as Saskatchewan Highway 47 (Hwy 47) in northern Divide County. Route description ND 40 begins at a junction with US 2 south of Tioga, in eastern Williams County. It passes through that town and then begins a brief concurrency with ND 50 in McGregor. ND 40 and ND 50 together enter Burke County. ND 40 leaves the concurrency in Battleview by turning northward to ND 5 in Columbus, and then turns west to run concurrently with that highway.
