Non-cellular Life
Non-cellular life, also known as acellular life, is life that exists without a cellular structure for at least part of its life cycle. Historically, most definitions of life postulated that an organism must be composed of one or more cells, but, for some, this is no longer considered necessary, and modern criteria allow for forms of life based on other structural arrangements. Syncytial
A syncytium (; : syncytia; from Greek: σύν ''syn'' "together" and κύτος ''kytos'' "box, i.e. cell") or symplasm is a multinucleate cell that can result from multiple cell fusions of uninuclear cells (i.e., cells with a single nucleus), in contrast to a coenocyte, which can result from multiple nuclear divisions without accompanying cytokinesis. The muscle cell that makes up animal skeletal muscle is a classic example of a syncytium cell. RNA polymerase II (RNAP II and Pol II) is a Protein complex, multiprotein complex that Transcription (biology), transcribes DNA into precursors of messenger RNA (mRNA) and most small nuclear RNA (snRNA) and microRNA. It is one of the three RNA polymerase, RNAP enzymes found in the nucleus of eukaryote, eukaryotic cells. A 550 kDa complex of 12 subunits, RNAP II is the most studied type of RNA polymerase. A plasmid is a small, extrachromosomal DNA molecule within a cell that is physically separated from chromosomal DNA and can replicate independently. They are most commonly found as small circular, double-stranded DNA molecules in bacteria and archaea; however plasmids are sometimes present in and eukaryotic organisms as well. Plasmids often carry useful genes, such as those involved in antibiotic resistance, virulence, secondary metabolism and bioremediation. Nanobe
A nanobe () is a tiny filamental structure first found in some rocks and sediments. Some scientists hypothesize that nanobes are the smallest form of life, the size of the smallest known bacteria. No conclusive evidence exists that these structures are, or are not, living organisms, so their classification is controversial. The 1996 discovery of nanobes was published in 1998 by Uwins ''et al.'', from the University of Queensland, Australia. Several forms of biochemistry are agreed to be scientifically viable but are not proven to exist at this time. Carbon chauvinism is a neologism meant to disparage the assumption that the chemical processes of hypothetical extraterrestrial life must be constructed primarily from carbon (organic compounds) because as far as is known, carbon's chemical and thermodynamic properties render it far superior to all other elements at forming molecules used in living organisms. The expression "carbon chauvinism" is also used to criticize the idea that artificial intelligence cannot in theory be sentient or truly intelligent because the underlying matter is not biological. The first universal common ancestor (FUCA) is thought to be a non-cellular entity that was the earliest organism with a genetic code capable of biological translation of RNA molecules into peptides to produce proteins. Its descendants would include the last universal common ancestor (LUCA) and every modern cell. Obelisk (life Form)
An obelisk is a microscopic genetic element that consists of a type of infectious agent composed of RNA. Described as a "viroid-like element", they consist of RNA in a circular rod shape without any protein shell coating. Obelisks were identified in 2024 through computational analysis of vast genetic datasets. Their RNA sequences are entirely novel, and their placement within the tree of life remains uncertain as they do not appear to have a shared ancestry with any other life form, virus, or viroid. Obelisks are currently classified as an enigmatic taxon, forming a distinct phylogenetic group.
