Nokou
Nokou is a town and sub-prefecture of Kanem Region in Chad. It is the capital of the department of Nord Kanem. On April 18, 2021, Chadian president Idriss Déby was wounded by gunfire in the nearby town of Mele, as part of the Northern Chad offensive by the Front for Change and Concord in Chad (FACT). Kanem Region
Kanem () is one of the regions of Chad, 23 regions of Chad. It is named after the famous Kanem Empire, which was centred in this vicinity. The region's capital city, capital is Mao, Chad, Mao. It was created in 2002 from the former prefectures of Chad, prefecture of Kanem Prefecture, Kanem. In 2008, a portion of the Kanem region (the Bahr el Gazel Department) was split off to become the new Bahr el Gazel (region of Chad), Bahr el Gazel Region. 2021 Northern Chad Offensive
The Northern Chad offensive was a military offensive in Northern Chad, initiated by the Chadian rebel group Front for Change and Concord in Chad (FACT), took place from 11 April to 9 May 2021. It began in the Tibesti Region in the north of the country following the 2021 Chadian presidential election. Chadian President Idriss Déby was injured during the offensive on 19 April 2021 and died the next day, and his son Mahamat Déby became acting President of Chad on the same day. A special presidential election was expected in 2022, but was not held until 2024. The offensive ended in a Chadian military victory, though clashes continued in the country's north. Idriss Déby Itno ( '; 18 June 1952 – 20 April 2021) was a Chadian politician and military officer who was the sixth List of heads of state of Chad, president of Chad from 1991 until his death in 2021 during the 2021 Northern Chad offensive, Northern Chad offensive. His term of office of more than 30 years makes him Chad's longest-serving president. Déby was a member of the Bidayat dialect, Bidayat clan of the Zaghawa people, Zaghawa ethnic group. Front For Change And Concord In Chad
The Front for Change and Concord in Chad (, ), or FACT, is a political and military organisation created by SG Mahamat Mahdi Ali in March 2016 in Tanua, in the north of Chad, with the goal of overthrowing the government of Chad. It is a splinter group of the Union of Forces for Democracy and Development (UFDD). Ali declared his preparation for military operations against President Idriss Déby. The group was responsible for the death of Déby in April 2021, when he was killed while commanding troops on the frontline fighting the militants. Origins The group was founded by dissident Chadian army officers who had split from the UFDD. FACT was organized as a union of different rebel factions in March 2016, but it quickly suffered from internal disputes.
