Noel Kelehan
John William "Noel" Kelehan (26 December 1935 – 6 February 2012) was an Irish people, Irish musician, Conductor (music), conductor of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and musical director of RTÉ, Radio TelefĂs Éireann. He retired as conductor in 1998. Life and career As well as being an accomplished jazz pianist, he was most famous for being the conductor of many Irish entries to the Eurovision Song Contest, beginning in 1966 and ending in 1998. He conducted five winning Irish entries, in 1980, 1987, 1992, 1993, and 1996. In 1994, the winning song was performed without orchestral accompaniment. However, an entry rated second that year, "To nie ja!" performed by Edyta GĂłrniak from Poland, was also conducted by Kelehan. He also conducted the entry from Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1993. In total, Kelehan conducted 29 Eurovision entries, 24 of them Irish. In 1999, after Kelehan retired, the use of an orchestra was discontinued at the Contest. RTÉ Performing Groups
RTÉ Performing Groups was a performance group, operating over many decades, of five classical ensembles that were part of the Irish broadcaster RaidiĂł TeilifĂs Éireann (RTÉ). All but the string quartet (originally the Vanbrugh Quartet, the ConTempo Quartet from 2013) are based in Dublin (the ConTempo had a Galway base, Vanbrugh were based in Cork). In January 2022, three of the member groups were moved from RTÉ to the aegis of the National Concert Hall by the Irish government. RTÉ continues to host the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. Frode Thingnæs
Frode Thingnæs (20 March 1940 – 15 November 2012) was a Norwegian jazz composer, arranger, conductor and trombone player who formed the Frode Thingnæs Quintet in 1960. Career Thingnæs was introduced to music at eight years old, when he started to play in a Sinsen school band. His first instrument was the trumpet, but in 1953 he took up the instrument he would come to be known for: the trombone. Due to his success at a young age, he was able to continue his musical education at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he met other rising musicians. From 1959 onward, Thingnæs met and performed with the bands of Bjørn Jacobsen, Gunnar Brostigen, Mikkel Flagstad and Kjell Karlsen. Starting in 1961, he led his own quartet, which over time included Egil Kapstad, Terje Rypdal, Laila Dalseth, Espen Rud, Bjørn Alterhaug and Per Husby.
