Noel Conroy
Noel Conroy (born 11 March 1947) is a former Irish Garda who served as Garda Commissioner from 2003 to 2007. He was born in Aughleam, Erris, County Mayo. He attended Aughleam N.S. and St. Nathy's College, Ballaghaderreen. He joined the Garda Síochána in 1963 and has had a distinguished career, serving at senior level in demanding sectors in the Gardaí. He was awarded a Silver Scott Medal in 1981. Most of his career was in the detective branch and he was part of T squad in the 1980s in Dublin, when organised crime gangs of the day were targeted. Fachtna Murphy
Fachtna Murphy (born 26 June 1947) is a former Irish Garda who served as Garda Commissioner from 2007 to 2010. Prior to his appointment he was the Deputy Commissioner with responsibility for operational policing strategies in the Garda Síochána. He grew up in Timoleague, County Cork. He joined the Garda Síochána in 1967 and holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Degree in Police Management and a Diploma in Management and Industrial Relations, and has also studied policing methods overseas at both the FBI Academy, Quantico, Virginia Quantico ( or ; formerly Potomac) is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. Erris
Erris is a barony in northwestern County Mayo in Ireland consisting of over , much of which is mountainous blanket bog. It has extensive sea coasts along its west and north boundaries. The main towns are Belmullet and Bangor Erris. The name Erris derives from the Irish 'Iar Ros' meaning 'western promontory'. The full name is the Iorrais Domnann, after the Fir Bolg tribe, the Fir Domnann. Garda Síochána College is the education and training college of the Garda Síochána (Irish police service). It is located at McCan Barracks, Templemore, County Tipperary in Ireland. The college has been in Templemore since 1964. History The training role was previously undertaken at Garda Headquarters (in the Phoenix Park, Dublin). FBI Academy
The FBI Academy is the Federal Bureau of Investigation's law enforcement training and research center near the town of Quantico in Stafford County, Virginia. Operated by the bureau's Training Division, it was first opened for use on May 7, 1972 on of woodland, which is not available for public tours. The academy was opened for the purpose of training the new agents after FBI Agents were granted the power to arrest, and to possess a firearm, in 1933. As the newly armed agents needed somewhere to train, the Marine Corps granted them access to their firing ranges in Quantico, Virginia. After outgrowing the Marine Corps firing ranges the FBI was granted permission to build their own firing range and classroom on the base. Ballaghaderreen
Ballaghaderreen () is a town in County Roscommon, Ireland. It was part of County Mayo prior to 1898. It is located just off the N5 National primary road. The population was 1,808 in the 2016 census. History As of 1837, the town was recorded as having 1147 inhabitants in about 200 houses and as "rising in importance" as a post-town, being on the (then) new mail coach road from Ballina to Longford. The Walter Scott Medal for Valor is a medal awarded for acts of bravery by the Garda Síochána. It is not a state award, being in the gift of the Garda Commissioner. History The Garda medal was instituted at the behest of Colonel Walter Scott, a New York City philanthropist who took an interest in policing. In 1923 he gave to the Garda a one thousand dollar gold Bond, which would pay in perpetuity for a gold medal.
