June 2017 Portugal Wildfires
A series of four initial deadly wildfires erupted across central Portugal in the afternoon of 17 June 2017 within minutes of each other, resulting in at least 66 deaths and 204 injured people. The majority of deaths took place in the Pedrógão Grande municipality, when a fire swept across a road filled with evacuees escaping in their cars. Portuguese officials dispatched more than 1,700 firefighters nationwide to combat the blazes and Prime Minister António Costa declared three days of national mourning. Spain, France, Morocco and Italy deployed firefighters and Water Bombers to help extinguish the fires. Although most early official reports pointed to a dry thunderstorm as the cause of the tragedy, the President of the Portuguese Firefighters League expressed his conviction the fire was sparked by arsonists. Leiria () is a city and municipality in the Central Region, Portugal, Central Region of Portugal. It is the 2nd largest city in that same region, after Coimbra, with a municipality population of 128,640 (as of 2021) in an area of . It is the seat of Leiria District, its own district and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Leiria-Fátima. Pedrógão Grande
Pedrógão Grande (; ) is a municipality in the district of Leiria (district), Leiria in Portugal. The population in 2011 was 3,915 in an area of . The town itself has fewer than 2,000 inhabitants, with the remaining population living in several small villages surrounded by forests. The town center contains historical provincial gentry housing. The earliest town charter dates to 1206, when rights to hold a market were conceded by Afonso Pedro, natural son of Afonso II of Portugal; however, the current municipality was established only in 1898. The present mayor is Valdemar Gomes Fernandes Alves, an independent elected in 2013 by the Social Democratic Party (Portugal), Social Democratic Party. The municipal holiday is July 24. Avelar
Avelar is a civil parish of the municipality of Ansião, Portugal. It was a '' vila'' during two occasions: for the first time from November 12, 1514 through December 31, 1836; and for the second time from June 21, 1995 to the present day. Etymology The name ''avelar'' is said to come from the Latin ''avellanale'' or ''avellanal'', related to hazels (''Corylus avellana''). The name was later appended to the town as a result of the Jewish expulsions from Spain (1391, 1492) and the subsequent resettlement of Jews in Portugal. History Antiquity An old Roman pathway connecting Conímbriga (modern day Condeixa) to Sellium (modern day Tomar) passed through the location of modern-day Avelar.
