BBC Sunday Night Theatre
''Sunday Night Theatre'' was a long-running series of televised live television plays screened by BBC Television from early 1950 until 1959. The productions for the first five years or so of the run were re-staged live the following Thursday, partly because of technical limitations in this era, and the theatrical basis of early television drama. Some of the earliest collaborations between Rudolph Cartier and Nigel Kneale were produced for this series, including '' Arrow to the Heart'' (1952, 1956) and ''Nineteen Eighty-Four'' (1954). The Sunday night drama slot was subsequently renamed ''The Sunday-Night Play'' which ran for four seasons between 1960 and 1963. ITV transmitted its own unrelated run of ''Sunday Night Theatre'' between 1969 and 1974. Rex Rienits
Rex Gunther Rienits (17 April 1909 – 30 April 1971) was an Australian writer of radio, films, plays and TV. He was a journalist before becoming one of the leading radio writers in Australia. He moved to England in 1949 and worked for a number of years there. He later returned to Australia and worked on early local TV drama. According to Richard Lane Rienits "was the most affable and generous of men; warm in his friendships, generous with his time and in his efforts to help those still with the ladder to scale. Above all, he was utterly dedicated to the propagation of Australian history, art and playwriting." Early life and career Rienits was born in Dubbo. ''No Smoking'' is a 1955 British B movie, second feature ('B') comedy film directed by Henry Cass and starring Reg Dixon (comedian), Reg Dixon, Peter Martyn (actor), Peter Martyn, Belinda Lee and Lionel Jeffries. The screenplay was by Kenneth Hayles and Phil Park, based on the No Smoking!, 1952 TV play of same title by George Moresby-White and Rex Rienits. It was produced by Tempean Films. Shortly after the production Lee was signed up for a contract with the Rank Organisation. Plot Reg Bates is a scientist who invents a pill that can cure smokers of their nicotine addiction. This is revealed by a visiting American, Hal Hurst. Bates faces strong opposition from both the tobacco industry and the government. Robert Rutherford Beatty (19 October 1909 – 3 March 1992) was a Canadian actor who worked in film, television and radio for most of his career and was especially known in the UK. Alan Norton Fletcher Webb (2 July 1906 – 22 June 1982) was an English actor. He was principally known as a stage performer, but made several film and television appearances. Jane Barrett
Jane Barrett (1922 – 1969) was an English actress. Barrett was born in Highgate, left school aged 14 and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She worked extensively in radio, theatre and television. It was estimated she appeared in over 2000 radio sessions on the BBC and by the end of the she had appeared on the air every day for four years. Barrett made her film debut with a tiny role in ''The Citadel'', but then focused on stage, television and radio until cast in a supporting role in ''The Captive Heart''. This led to a six-year contract with the Rank Organisation. Barrett married a Danish artist, Hans Helveg, in 1947. While in Australia to make ''Eureka Stockade'' she signed a contract with the ABC to appear in several radio dramas.
