No-Frills Books
No-Frills Books were a series of books published in 1981. The books in the series were titled after their genres, Western, Science Fiction, Romance, and Mystery. Each contained a list of "ingredients" on the front cover. For instance the ingredients for ''Mystery'' were "The Mystery volume is complete with everything: 'Detective, Telephone, Mysterious Woman, Corpses, Streets, Rain. The series was created by Terry Bisson of Jove Books who was inspired by the rise of generic brands at the supermarket. "I thought of it as a satire on publishing," Bisson told ''99% Invisible'' in 2020, "if you could have no-frills cornflakes why couldn't you have no-frills romance?" The series contracted with authors who had written in their genres. These authors, none of whom are given credit by the books, were told to write no more than 18,000 words and to include every cliche of the genre possible in the book. Western (genre)
The Western is a genre of fiction typically Setting (narrative), set in the American frontier (commonly referred to as the "Old West" or the "Wild West") between the California Gold Rush of 1849 and the closing of the frontier in 1890, and commonly associated with Americana (culture), folk tales of the Western United States, particularly the Southwestern United States, as well as Northern Mexico and Western Canada. No Frills
A no-frills or no frills service or product is one for which the non-essential features have been removed to keep the price low. The term "Ruffle (sewing), frills" originally refers to a style of fabric decoration. Something offered to customers for no additional charge may be designated as a "frill" – for example, free drinks on airline journeys, or a radio installed in a rental car. No-frills businesses operate on the principle that by removing luxurious additions, customers may be offered lower prices. Victor Milán
Victor Woodward Milán (August 3, 1954 – February 13, 2018) was an American writer known for libertarian science fiction and an interest in cybernetics. Life and career Milán was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In 1986 Milán won the Prometheus Award for ''Cybernetic Samurai''. He has also written several shared universe works for the Forgotten Realms, ''Star Trek'', ''BattleTech'' and ''Wild Cards'' series. William Cowper
William Cowper ( ; – 25 April 1800) was an English poet and Anglican hymnwriter. One of the most popular poets of his time, Cowper changed the direction of 18th-century nature poetry by writing of everyday life and scenes of the English countryside. In many ways, he was one of the forerunners of Romantic poetry. Samuel Taylor Coleridge called him "the best modern poet", whilst William Wordsworth particularly admired his poem "Yardley-Oak". After being institutionalised for insanity, Cowper found refuge in a fervent evangelicalism, evangelical Christianity. He continued to suffer doubt about his salvation and, after a dream in 1773, believed that he was doomed to Damnation#Christianity, eternal damnation. He recovered, and went on to write more religious hymns. His religious sentiment and association with John Newton (who wrote the hymn "Amazing Grace") led to much of the poetry for which he is best remembered, and to the series of Olney Hymns. ''99% Invisible'' is a radio show and podcast produced and created by Roman Mars that focuses on design. It began as a collaborative project between San Francisco public radio station KALW and the American Institute of Architects in San Francisco. PRX has distributed the show for broadcasting on a number of radio stations and as a podcast on the Radiotopia network. Generic Brand
Generic brands of consumer products (often supermarket goods) are distinguished by the absence of a brand name, instead identified solely by product characteristics and identified by plain, usually black-and-white packaging. Jove Books, formerly known as Pyramid Books, is an American paperback and eBook publishing imprint, founded as an independent paperback house in 1949 by Almat Magazine Publishers (also known as Almat Publishing Corporation) (Alfred R. Plaine and Matthew Huttner). The company was sold to the Walter Reade Organization in the late 1960s. It was acquired in 1974 by Harcourt Brace (which became Harcourt Brace Jovanovich) which renamed it to Jove in 1977 and continued the line as an imprint.
