Nkhotakota District
Nkhotakota is a district in the Central Region of Malawi. The capital is Nkhotakota. The district covers an area of 4,259 km² and has a population of 395,897. The word Nkhotakota means "zig-zag" in Chichewa. It is located along the shore of Lake Malawi. Ngoni People
The Ngoni people are an ethnic group living in the present-day Southern African countries of Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. The Ngoni trace their origins to the Nguni people, Nguni and Zulu people, Zulu people of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. The displacement of the Nguni people in the Mfecane, great scattering following the Zulu wars had repercussions in social reorganization as far north as Malawi and Zambia. Grezelder Jeffrey
Grezelder Jeffrey is a politician in Malawi. She was an MP for the Democratic Progressive Party rising to be Secretary General. In 2024 she joined the Malawi Congress Party Life She was elected as a member of the National Assembly for a constituency in Nkhotakota District in central Malawi. She became the party's Secretary General and she won unopposed in the primaries but she lost this seat in 2019. During the elections she had said that people should not vote for Ulema Msungama. She slandered him by saying that he had raped his cousin. In 2021 she was in the high court crying with remorse before the judge adjourned the court so that they could make an out of court settlement. At the end of 2023 she announced that the National Governing Council meeting of the DPP would be held of December 6. National Assembly Of Malawi
The National Assembly of Malawi is the supreme legislative body of the nation. It is situated on Capital Hill, Lilongwe along Presidential Way. The National Assembly alone possesses legislative supremacy and thereby ultimate power over all other political bodies in Malawi. At its head is the Speaker of the House who is elected by his or her peers. Since June 19, 2019, the Speaker is Catherine Gotani Hara. The 1994 Constitution provided for a Senate, but Parliament repealed it. Malawi therefore has a unicameral legislature in practice. Lambya People
The Lambya are an ethnic and linguistic group based along the border of northwestern Malawi, Ileje and in Momba District of Mbeya Region, Tanzania. A minority also exists in Zambia. In 2001, the Lambya population was estimated to number about 85,000 (45,000 in Malawi and 40,000) (from a 1987 estimate)) in Tanzania. Nyakyusa People
The Nyakyusa (also called the Sokile, Ngone or Nkone) are a Bantu ethnolinguistic group who live in the mountains of southern Mbeya Region of Tanzania and the Northern Region of Malawi. They speak the Nyakyusa language, a member of the Bantu language family. In 1993, the Nyakyusa population was estimated to be 1,050,000, with 750,000 living in Tanzania. The Nyakyusa are colonising people where success and survival depended on individual effort. Historically, they were called the 'Ngone' below the Songwe River in British Nyasaland, and 'Nyakyusa' above the river in German territory. Nyanja People
The Chewa are a Bantu ethnic group primarily found in Malawi and Zambia, with few populations in Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The Chewa are closely related to people in surrounding regions such as the Tumbuka. As with the Nsenga and Tumbuka, a small part of Chewa territory came under the influence of the Ngoni, who were of Zulu or Natal/ Transvaal origin. The Yao people are a Bantu ethnic group living at the southern end of Lake Malawi. The Yao are a predominantly Muslim-faith group of about two million, whose homelands encompass the countries of Malawi, and the north of Mozambique. History The majority of the Yao people are subsistence farmers and fishermen. When Arabs arrived on the southeastern coast of Africa, they began trading with the Yao people for ivory and grains, exchanged for clothes and weapons. They also traded in slaves. Yao kingdoms came into being, as Yao chiefs took control of the Niassa province of Mozambique in the 19th century.
