Georg Alexander (born Werner Ludwig Georg Lüddeckens; 3 April 1888 – 30 October 1945) was a German film actor who was a prolific presence in German cinema. He also directed a number of films during the silent era. Personal life He was married to the Norwegian actress Aud Egede-Nissen from 1915 to 1924. Their son Georg Richter also became an actor. Olga Engl
Olga Engl (30 May 1871 – 21 September 1946) was an Austrian-German stage and motion picture actress who appeared in nearly 200 films. Biography Engl was privately educated in an Ursuline monastery and began her acting career at the Prague Conservatory. In August 1887 she made her stage début as Bertha in the play ''Die Verschwörung des Fiesco zu Genua'' in her home town. In 1888, she moved to the city of Danzig and performed in the theatre from 1889 to 1892 then briefly moved to Berlin. From 1892 to 1895 she performed with the court theatre in Munich and from 1895 to 1897 in Hamburg at the Thalia Theater, and from 1897 in Hanover. Engl made her film debut in the 1911 British silent film ''The Adoptive Child'' then returned to Germany and began appearing in German film productions. Ria Jende (October 29, 1898 – after 1927) was a Belgian-German film actress during the silent era.Grange p.97 She also produced three of her own films. Originally from Brussels she moved to Germany at a young age, and began working in the German film industry before the First World War after having been discovered in Berlin by Oskar Messter. She enjoyed particular fame during the early 1920s, but drifted out of public awareness and the year of her death is unknown. In films, an intertitle, also known as a title card, is a piece of filmed, printed text edited into the midst of (i.e., ''inter-'') the photographed action at various points. Intertitles used to convey character dialogue are referred to as "dialogue intertitles", and those used to provide related descriptive/narrative material are referred to as "expository intertitles". In modern usage, the terms refer to similar text and logo material inserted at or near the start or end of films and television shows. Silent film era In this era intertitles were mostly called "subtitles" and often had Art Deco motifs. They were a mainstay of silent films once the films became of sufficient length and detail to necessitate dialogue or narration to make sense of the enacted or documented events. Silent Film
A silent film is a film with no synchronized Sound recording and reproduction, recorded sound (or more generally, no audible dialogue). Though silent films convey narrative and emotion visually, various plot elements (such as a setting or era) or key lines of dialogue may, when necessary, be conveyed by the use of intertitle, title cards. The term "silent film" is something of a misnomer, as these films were almost always accompanied by live sounds. During the silent era that existed from the mid-1890s to the late 1920s, a piano, pianist, theatre organ, theater organist—or even, in large cities, a small orchestra—would often play music to accompany the films.
