Nina Moise
Nina Moise (July 15, 1890 – December 14, 1968) was an American actress, vocal coach, and theatrical and film director. Early life and education Nina Ethel Moise was from San Francisco, the daughter of Philip Henry Moise and Emma Moise. She had older sisters Clarice and Hazel. Clarice married British explorer and author Arthur de Carle Sowerby in Shanghai in 1925, and was managing editor of ''The China Journal.'' Nina Moise graduated from Girls' High School in 1908, and like her sisters attended Stanford University, where she was president of the Associated Women Students, and ran for editor of the school's literary monthly, the ''Sequoia''. In 1911, she became the first woman student to address the Stanford student body. She graduated from Stanford in 1912. Career Theatre Moise was an actress who became a theatrical and film director. Arthur De Carle Sowerby
Arthur de Carle Sowerby (8 July 1885 – 16 August 1954; ) was a British naturalist, explorer, writer, and publisher in China. His father was Arthur Sowerby (15 October 1857 – 27 June 1934; ). Background Arthur Sowerby was the son of a Christian missionary in China, the Reverend Arthur Sowerby, and Louisa Clayton. He was also the great-great-grandson of James Sowerby the botanist and founder of the Geological Society. From 1881, Arthur's parents were based at the Baptist Missionary Society mission station in Shanxi. The Sowerby family was on furlough in England at the time of the 1900 Boxer Rebellion during which many of their friends and colleagues at their Shanxi mission station were massacred. Simone Thérèse Fernande Simon (23 April 1910 or 1911 – 22 February 2005) was a French film actress who began her film career in 1931. Early life Born in Marseille, France, she was the daughter of Henri Louis Firmin Clair Simon, a French Jewish engineer and airplane pilot in World War II who died in a concentration camp, and Erma Maria Domenica Giorcelli, an Italian housewife. Before settling and growing up in Marseille, Simon lived in Madagascar, Budapest, Turin, and Berlin. She went to Paris in 1931 and worked briefly as a singer, model, and fashion designer.
