Nina Crone
Nina Crone (1934 – 2007) was an Australian gardening writer, broadcaster, teacher and school principal. Biography Crone was the daughter of James and Grace (née Hall) Crone. She attended Presbyterian Ladies' College in East Melbourne and graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1953 with a bachelor of arts degree. She then taught in Europe and Australia while also studying towards a bachelor of education degree, which she completed in 1962. From 1965 to 1974 Crone was a radio and TV producer for the ABC Schools Broadcasts; she was also a member of the Victorian State Advisory Committee for School Broadcasts. In 1975 she became headmistress of the Melbourne Girls' Grammar School. She continued with her community involvements, including serving as a council member of the Girl Guides Association of Victoria, a committee member of the United Nations Association of Australia (Victoria) and a committee member for the Australian College of Education (Victoria). Presbyterian Ladies' College, Melbourne (PLC), is an independent, private, Presbyterian, day and boarding school for girls, located in Burwood, an eastern suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Founded in 1875 at East Melbourne, PLC was one of the first independent schools for girls in Australia. The Order of Australia is an Australian honour that recognises Australian citizens and other persons for outstanding achievement and service. It was established on 14 February 1975 by Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia, on the advice of then prime minister Gough Whitlam. Before the establishment of the order, Australians could receive British honours, which continued to be issued in parallel until 1992. Appointments to the order are made by the governor-general, "with the approval of The Sovereign", according to recommendations made by the Council for the Order of Australia. Girl Guides Australia (GGA) is the national Girl Guiding organisation in Australia. Its mission is to empower "girls and young women to discover their potential as leaders of their world". Membership is open to all girls and young women from all cultures, faiths and traditions. Guiding groups formed in Australia as early as 1909, and by 1920 Girl Guide Associations had been formed in six states. In 1926 the State Associations federated and formed a national organization which became a founding member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in 1928.
