Nina Bertini-Humphreys
Nina Bertini-Humphreys was an Irish-born operatic soprano, active in the United States in the 1890s, and in Britain and Ireland after 1900. Early life and education Nina Humphreys (or Humphrys) was born in Ireland. She studied voice in Italy with Francesco Lamperti and Teresa Brambilla, and made her debut there as Amina in ''La sonnambula''. She used the name "Nina Bertini" early in her career on the stage, then added her family name to the stage name. Career Bertini-Humphreys was a ''prima donna'' operatic soprano. She toured in the United States as a member of Emma Abbott's Company in the 1880s, and of the Marie Tavary Grand English Opera Company, the Metropolitan Grand English Opera Company, and the Hinrichs Grand Opera Company in the 1890s. Francesco Lamperti
Francesco Lamperti (11 March 1811 or 1813 – 1 May 1892) was an Italian singing teacher and the father of the famed singing teacher, Giovanni Battista Lamperti, the author of ''The Technics of Bel Canto''. Biography A native of Savona, Lamperti attended the Milan Conservatory where, beginning in 1850, he taught for a quarter of a century. He was director at the Teatro Filodrammatico in Lodi. In 1875, he left the school and began to teach as a private tutor. Teresa Brambilla
Teresa Brambilla (23 October 1813 – 15 July 1895) was an Italian soprano best known for having first interpreted the role of Gilda in Giuseppe Verdi's opera ''Rigoletto''. During a career that spanned 20 years, she sang throughout Italy and in other European cities, including Paris, Barcelona and Odessa. ''La sonnambula'' (; ''The Sleepwalker'') is an opera semiseria in two acts, with music in the ''bel canto'' tradition by Vincenzo Bellini set to an Italian libretto by Felice Romani, based on a scenario for a ''ballet-pantomime'' written by Eugène Scribe and choreographed by Jean-Pierre Aumer called ''La somnambule, ou L'arrivée d'un nouveau seigneur''. The ballet had premiered in Paris in September 1827 at the height of a fashion for stage works incorporating somnambulism. Prima Donna
In opera or ''commedia dell'arte'', a prima donna (; Italian for 'first lady'; : ''prime donne'') is the leading female singer in the company, the person to whom the ''prime'' roles would be given. ''Prime donne'' often had grand off-stage personalities and were seen as demanding of their colleagues. Because of this, the term has spread in contemporary usage, from its original usage in opera to referring to anyone behaving in a demanding or temperamental fashion or having an inflated view of oneself. Emma Abbott (December 9, 1850 – January 5, 1891) was an American operatic soprano and impresario known for her pure, clear voice of great flexibility and volume. Early life Emma Abbott was born in 1850 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of the struggling Chicago musician Seth Abbott and his wife, Almira (née Palmer). As a child, she and her brother George studied singing, piano, guitar and violin with their father. The family moved to Peoria, Illinois, Emma was eight years of age when, she made her first appearance on the stage, singing at a concert given in her father's office in Peoria. In 1854, Professor Abbott was unable to find a sufficient number of music students to make ends meet and the family suffered from financial problems. ''Carmen'' () is an opera in four acts by the French composer Georges Bizet. The libretto was written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, based on the novella of the same title by Prosper Mérimée.
