Nike Literary Award
The Nike Literary Award (, pronounced ) is a literary prize awarded each year for the best book of a single living author writing in Polish and published the previous year. It is widely considered the most important award for Polish literature. Established in 1997 and funded by ''Gazeta Wyborcza'', Poland's second largest daily paper, and the consulting company NICOM, it is conferred annually in October. It is open for nominees from all literary genres, including non-fiction essays and autobiographies. Each year, a nine-member jury selects the laureate in a three-stage process. Twenty official nominees are accepted in May, out of which seven finalists are declared in September. The final decision does not take place until the day of the award ceremony in October. The award consists of a statuette referring to the Greek goddess Nike, designed by the prominent Polish sculptor Kazimierz Gustaw Zemła, and a cash prize of currently PLN 100,000 (ca. $25,000). Aleksander Kwaśniewski
Aleksander Kwaśniewski (; born 15 November 1954) is a Polish politician and journalist. He served the maximum two terms as the president of Poland from 1995 to 2005. His tenure as President was marked by modernization of Poland, rapid economic growth (Poland's GDP doubled in ten years), the drafting of a new Constitution of Poland, Polish Constitution (1997), and the accession of Poland to NATO (1999) and the European Union (2004). In 2004, he brokered a pro-democratic agreement during the Orange Revolution in Ukraine. Zyta Rudzka (Polish pronunciation: ; born 10 October 1964) is a Polish novelist, screenwriter, poet and psychologist. She is regarded as one of the most prominent contemporary Polish writers. Marcin Wicha (1972 – 24 January 2025) was a Polish graphic designer, children's author, and essayist. Background Wicha was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1972, to a family of Jewish origin. He was the son of Piotr Wicha (1946–2006), an architect, and his wife, Joanna Rabanowska-Wicha (1946–2015); the grandson of Jan Rabanowski from his mother's side, a politician and minister of communications of Poland during the Communist period, and of Władysław Wicha from his father's side, who served as Minister of Interior. Wicha died on 24 January 2025, at the age of 52.
