Nightstick (band)
Nightstick is an American sludge metal band from Weymouth, Massachusetts. It was formed by Siege (band), Siege drummer Rob Williams. Nightstick is well known for their unique stage shows which feature a dancing clown called Padoinka. Padoinka the clown is widely considered to be the fourth member of the band and has featured heavily on the art work of all three full-length albums. Nightstick was given the key to the city of Weymouth by the mayor Sue Kay. Weymouth is a city in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. It is one of 13 municipalities in the state to have city forms of government while retaining "town of" in their official names. It is named after Weymouth, Dorset, a coastal town in England, and is the second-oldest settlement in Massachusetts, second only to Plymouth, Massachusetts, Plymouth. Sludge metal (also known as sludge doom or simply sludge) is an Extreme metal, extreme subgenre of heavy metal music that combines elements of doom metal and hardcore punk. The genre generally includes slow tempos, down-tuned guitars and nihilistic lyrics discussing poverty, drug addiction and pollution. The sound of sludge metal has its origins in California hardcore punk bands in the early-to-mid-1980s like Black Flag (band), Black Flag, Flipper (band), Flipper and Fang (band), Fang, who began slowing their tempos and embracing the influence of Black Sabbath. This sound was expanded upon by the Melvins towards the end of the decade and the bands they influenced in both the Seattle grunge scene, and in Louisiana with Eyehategod, Crowbar (American band), Crowbar and Acid Bath. Noise Rock
Noise rock (sometimes called noise punk) is a noise music, noise-oriented style of experimental rock that spun off from punk rock in the 1980s. Drawing on movements such as minimal music, minimalism, industrial music, and New York hardcore, artists indulge in extreme levels of distortion through the use of electric guitars and, less frequently, electronic instrumentation, either to provide percussive sounds or to contribute to the overall arrangement. Some groups are tied to song structures, such as Sonic Youth. Relapse Records is an American independent record label based in Upper Darby Township, Pennsylvania. It was founded by Matthew F. Jacobson in 1990. The label features many grindcore, death metal, metalcore and sludge metal artists. History The label was started by Matthew F. Jacobson in August 1990 in his parents' basement in Aurora, Colorado. Siege (band)
Siege was an American hardcore punk band from Weymouth, Massachusetts. Formed in 1981, they were active in the Boston hardcore scene from 1984 to 1985, and reunited briefly in 1991. Drummer Rob Williams and guitarist Kurt Habelt led a live ensemble of reunion performances between 2016 and 2023. In its original incarnation, Siege paired extremely fast tempos with vocalist Kevin Mahoney's screeches and growls in their intense style of hardcore. Though little known at the time, the band has posthumously become revered by punk and heavy metal fans worldwide and is now regarded as one of the pioneers of the grindcore and powerviolence subgenres. Seth Putnam
Seth Edward Putnam (May 15, 1968 – June 11, 2011) was an American musician best known as the founder and sole consistent member of grindcore band Anal Cunt. Throughout his career, Putnam was also involved in numerous side projects. Biography Early years Seth Edward Putnam was born on May 15, 1968, in Newton, Massachusetts, to Edward R. Putnam and Barbara Ann Donohue. He was of half English and half Irish descent. His parents are divorced. Putnam was married to his first wife, Alison Dunn, from December 1998 through June 2001.
