The Nigeria national football team represents Nigeria in Men's international Association football, football. Governed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), they are three-time Africa Cup of Nations (Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON) winners, with their most recent title in 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, 2013. In February 2024, the Nigerian national football team was ranked 28th in the FIFA World Rankings, FIFA rankings. The team has qualified for six of the last eight FIFA World Cups, missing only the 2006 FIFA World Cup, 2006 and 2022 FIFA World Cup, 2022 editions. The Nigeria Football Federation (known as Nigeria Football Association until 2008) is Nigeria's association football, football sports governing body, governing body. It was formally launched in 1945 and formed the first Nigerian national football team in 1949. It joined Confederation of African Football, CAF in 1959 and FIFA in 1960. The Africa Cup of Nations, commonly abbreviated as AFCON and officially known as the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations for sponsorship reasons, is the main biennial international men's association football competition in Africa. It is sanctioned by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and was first held in 1957. Since 1968, it has been held every two years, switching to odd-numbered years in 2013. In the first tournament in 1957, there were only three participating nations: Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia. South Africa who were originally scheduled to join, but all were disqualified due to the apartheid policies of the government then in power. 1973 All-Africa Games
The 2nd All-Africa Games, also known as Lagos 1973, were played from 7 to 18 January 1973, in Lagos, Nigeria. After the success of the first African Games, the organizing bodies awarded the second games to Bamako, Mali to be held in 1969. A military coup disrupted the plans and the organizers moved the Games to Lagos, Nigeria to be held in 1971. The Games were postponed once again and finally opened in January 1973. A torch was lit in Brazzaville a week before the Games and transported to Lagos as a symbol of the continuity of the Games. Security again was very tight at the Games. This time in response to the massacre of Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympic Games just four months earlier. The African Nations Championship, known for sponsorship purposes as the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship and commonly abbreviated as CHAN, is a biennial African association football tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) since 2009 and first announced in September 2007. The participating teams must consist of players playing in their national league competitions.
