Nienstedten Cemetery
The Lutheran Nienstedten Cemetery () is a church-operated historic burial ground in Hamburg, Germany. The cemetery is owned by the Evangelical Lutheran parish church of Nienstedten, Hamburg. The cemetery is located on the Elbchaussee near the parish church in Nienstedten, now a Hamburg suburb. It is one of the oldest cemeteries still in operation in the Greater Hamburg area with around 250 burials taking place each year. History and description The old cemetery was established in 1814. The cemetery has a size of 10.5 hectares after several expansions. A total of 11 extensions took place between 1836 and 1975. The most important requirement for the purchase of a grave is being a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. North Elbian Evangelical Lutheran Church
The North Elbian Evangelical Lutheran Church (; NEK) was a Lutheran regional church in Northern Germany which emerged from a merger of four churches in 1977 and merged with two more churches in 2012. The NEK largely covered the area of the states of Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg where it was the most important Christian denomination. It had 2.1 million members (as of 2006) in 595 parishes, constituting 46% of the regional population. In May 2012 the NEK, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Mecklenburg and the Pomeranian Evangelical Church merged into Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany. The NEK was a full member of the Protestant Church in Germany (Evangelische Kirche in Deutschland, EKD), the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Germany (VELKD), and the Lutheran World Federation (joined 1977). Paul Nevermann
Paul Nevermann (5 February 1902 – 22 March 1979) was a German politician, member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and First Mayor of Hamburg (1961–1965). Early life and education Nevermann was born in Klein Flottbek (a then independent village in the Pinneberg district now a neighborhood in Hamburg's quarter Nienstedten). He studied law and after his graduation Nevermann worked for the Hamburg labor office, but was fired 1933 as a member of the SPD by the Nazi government. Political life He joined the SPD in 1920. In the aftermath of the 20 July plot of 1944 he was arrested. After World War II he became Senator of Hamburg. From 1950 to 1953, Nevermann was Second Mayor of Hamburg and as a successor of Max Brauer he was elected as First Mayor on 1 January 1961. Bruno Loerzer
Bruno Loerzer (22 January 1891 – 23 August 1960) was a German air force officer during World War I and World War II. Credited with 44 aerial victories during World War I, he was one of Germany's leading flying aces, as well as commander of one of the first Imperial German Air Service ''Jagdgeschwader III, Jagdeschwaders''. Loerzer's close friendship with Hermann Göring led to Loerzer's service in the World War II ''Luftwaffe'', with subsequent promotion to Generaloberst by the war's end. Siegfried Lenz
Siegfried Lenz (; 17 March 19267 October 2014) was a German writer of novels, short stories and essays, as well as dramas for radio and the theatre. In 2000 he received the Goethe Prize on the 250th Anniversary of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's birth. He won the 2010 International Nonino Prize in Italy. Life Siegfried Lenz was born in Lyck, East Prussia (now Ełk, Poland), the son of a customs officer. After graduating in 1943 he was drafted into the ''Kriegsmarine''. Hans Henny Jahnn
Hans Henny Jahnn (born Hans Henny August Jahn'';'' 17 December 1894 – 29 November 1959) was a German playwright, novelist, and organ-builder. Personal life Hans Henny Jahn was born in 1894 in Stellingen, one of Hamburg's suburbs, and was the son of a shipwright. Jahn met Gottlieb Friedrich Harms "Friedel" (1893–1931), with whom he was united in a "mystical wedding" in 1913, at a secondary school (the St. Pauli ''Realschule'') which they both attended, and they fled from Germany to Norway to avoid enlistment into the army for World War I, where they lived together between 1914 and 1918, and after the war ended they returned to Hamburg. They met Ellinor Philips in 1918. In 1919, Jahnn founded the community of Ugrino with a sculptor, Franz Buse.
