Nido Formation
The Nido Formation is a stratigraphic unit of Neogene age in northwestern British Columbia, Canada. Naming The Nido Formation takes its name from Nido Creek, a stream flowing northeast from the eastern flank of Mount Edziza into Nuttlude Lake. Nido means "white man" in the Tahltan language. Geology The Nido Formation has a volume of , making it the second most voluminous geological formation of the Mount Edziza volcanic complex after the Armadillo Formation. It overlies the Raspberry, Armadillo and Little Iskut formations, all of which are Miocene in age. The Little Iskut Formation is a stratigraphic unit of Miocene age in northwestern British Columbia, Canada. Naming The Little Iskut Formation takes its name from the Little Iskut River, a tributary of the Iskut River which flows southeast from the southern end of the Mount Edziza volcanic complex. Geology The Little Iskut Formation has a volume of , making it the seventh most voluminous geological formation comprising the Mount Edziza volcanic complex. It occurs at the northeastern end of the Spectrum Range where it covers a roughly wide area. A small portion of the Little Iskut Formation is exposed in the Mess Creek Escarpment to the west. Alkali basalt or alkali olivine basalt is a dark-colored, porphyritic volcanic rock usually found in oceanic and continental areas associated with volcanic activity, such as oceanic islands, continental rifts and volcanic fields. Lava fields are large, mostly flat areas of surface or subaquatic lava flows. Such features are generally composed of highly fluid basalt lava, and can extend for tens or hundreds of miles across the underlying terrain. Morphology and structure The final morphology of a lava field can reveal properties such as internal structure, composition, and mechanics of the lava flow when it was fluid.
