Nicolle Gonzales
Nicolle Gonzales (born March 15, 1980, in Waterflow, New Mexico) is a Navajo certified midwife. She is the founder of the ''Changing Woman Initiative'', which is the nation's first combined Native American birthing and reproductive wellness center, in her home state, New Mexico. Biography She studied at the University of New Mexico. She first received her bachelor's degree in nursing, followed by a master level midwifery degree. She is a member of the American College of Nurse-Midwives and is certified with the American Midwifery Certification Board. Gonzales trained as a midwife after traumatic experiences during the birth of her first child. At the time, she was the only Native American midwife-nurse student in the country. She has worked at Santa Fe Indian Hospital. Gonzales lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She is a long-distance runner. Waterflow is an Unincorporated area#United States, unincorporated community and census-designated place in San Juan County, New Mexico, United States on the north side of the San Juan River (Colorado River), San Juan River. It is immediately west of Fruitland, New Mexico, Fruitland and north across the river from the Navajo Nation. It is east of Shiprock, New Mexico, Shiprock. History The area now known as Waterflow is traditional Navajo Nation, Navajo territory. This place was called ''Chʼį́įdii Łichííʼ'' (Red Devil) in reference to Walter Stallings who operated a trading post in the area; nowadays, ''Tséyaa Akʼahí'' (beneath-rock oil) seems to be another designation in reference to the nearby oil fields, as can be seen on billboards in the area (pictured). Native Americans are affected by noncommunicable illnesses related to social changes and contemporary eating habits. Increasing rates of obesity, poor nutrition, sedentary lifestyle, and social isolation affect many Americans. While subject to the same illnesses, Native Americans have higher morbidity and mortality to diabetes and cardiovascular disease as well as certain forms of cancer. Social and historical factors tend to promote unhealthy behaviors including suicide and alcohol dependence. Reduced access to health care in Native American communities means that these diseases as well as infections affect more people for longer periods of time.
