Nicolaus Copernicus University Polar Station
The Nicolaus Copernicus University Polar Station (Stacja Polarna Uniwersytetu Mikołaja Kopernika na Spitsbergenie) is a Polish research station in north-western Spitsbergen. It is located in the northern part of the Kaffiøyra close to Aavatsmarkbreen and has operated since 1975. It was opened by the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń and named after Nicolaus Copernicus. The station has been used by 13 expeditions and 70 people. In its 30-year existence the station has been visited by about 300 people. The Nicolaus Copernicus University Polar Station is the second northernmost Poland, Polish scientific institution. Nicolaus Copernicus
Nicolaus Copernicus (; pl, Mikołaj Kopernik; gml, Niklas Koppernigk, german: Nikolaus Kopernikus; 19 February 1473 – 24 May 1543) was a Renaissance polymath, active as a mathematician, astronomer, and Catholic canon, who formulated a model of the universe that placed the Sun rather than Earth at its center. In all likelihood, Copernicus developed his model independently of Aristarchus of Samos, an ancient Greek astronomer who had formulated such a model some eighteen centuries earlier. The publication of Copernicus's model in his book ' (''On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres''), just before his death in 1543, was a major event in the history of science, triggering the Copernican Revolution and making a pioneering contribution to the Scientific Revolution. Spitsbergen
Spitsbergen (; formerly known as West Spitsbergen; Norwegian: ''Vest Spitsbergen'' or ''Vestspitsbergen'' , also sometimes spelled Spitzbergen) is the largest and the only permanently populated island of the Svalbard archipelago in northern Norway. Kaffiøyra
Kaffiøyra (Coffee Plain) is a coastal plain in Oscar II Land at Spitsbergen, Svalbard. The plain has a length of about thirteen kilometers, extending from Aavatsmarkbreen southwards to Oliverbreen. Kaffiøyra is crossed by several brooks originating from glaciers, including Øyrnesbekken which flows from Irenebreen to Øyrnes. Among headlands along the plain are Snipeodden, Øyrnes, Tjørnnes and Snippen. The Nicolaus Copernicus University Polar Station, a base for research in climatology, glaciology, hydrology and geomorphology, is located in the northern part of the plain. Aavatsmarkbreen is a glacier in Oscar II Land at Spitsbergen, Svalbard. It is named after politician and military officer Ivar Aavatsmark (born 1864), Ivar Aavatsmark. The glacier debouches into Forlandsundet, in the bay of Hornbækbukta (Svalbard), Hornbækbukta. A number of governments maintain permanent research stations in the Arctic. Also known as Arctic bases, polar stations or ice stations, these bases are widely distributed across the northern polar region of Earth. Historically few research stations have been permanent. Most of them were temporary, being abandoned after the completion of the project or owing to lack of funding to continue the research. Some of these were military or intelligence stations (listening posts) created as a result of the proximity of the U.S. and Soviet Union to each other's landmass across the polar region.
