Nicolas Bergeron
Nicolas Bergeron is a French mathematician born on 19 December 1975, who works in Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris. Early career Bergeron obtained his PhD at École normale supérieure de Lyon in the year 2000 under the supervision of Jean-Pierre Otal. His thesis was titled ''Cycles géodésiques dans les variétés hyperboliques'' ("geodesic cycles in hyperbolic varieties"). Work Bergeron's main interests are concerned with the geometry and topology of locally symmetric spaces and arithmetic groups, as well as their cohomology. Some of his publications show an interest in Oulipo, referencing An Attempt at Exhausting a Place in Paris by Georges Perec. He has also written a (non-mathematical) article about Jacques Roubaud. Geometry
Geometry (; ) is, with arithmetic, one of the oldest branches of mathematics. It is concerned with properties of space such as the distance, shape, size, and relative position of figures. A mathematician who works in the field of geometry is called a '' geometer''. Until the 19th century, geometry was almost exclusively devoted to Euclidean geometry, which includes the notions of point, line, plane, distance, angle, surface, and curve, as fundamental concepts. During the 19th century several discoveries enlarged dramatically the scope of geometry. One of the oldest such discoveries is Carl Friedrich Gauss' ("remarkable theorem") that asserts roughly that the Gaussian curvature of a surface is independent from any specific embedding in a Euclidean space. The International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) is the largest conference for the topic of mathematics. It meets once every four years, hosted by the International Mathematical Union (IMU). The Institut Universitaire de France (IUF, Academic Institute of France), is a service of the French Ministry of Higher Education that distinguishes each year a small number of university professors for their research excellence, as evidenced by their international recognition. Jean-Claude Sikorav (born 21 June 1957) is a French mathematician. He is professor at the École normale supérieure de Lyon. He is specialized in symplectic geometry. Main contributions Sikorav is known for his proof, joint with François Laudenbach, of the Arnold conjecture for Lagrangian intersections in cotangent bundles, as well as for introducing generating families in symplectic topology. Étienne Ghys
Étienne Ghys (born 29 December 1954) is a French mathematician. His research focuses mainly on geometry and dynamical systems, though his mathematical interests are broad. He also expresses much interest in the historical development of mathematical ideas, especially the contributions of Henri Poincaré. Alumnus of the École normale supérieure de Saint-Cloud, Ghys obtained his Ph.D. in 1979 from the University of Lille with thesis "Sur les actions localement libres du groupe affine" written under the direction of Gilbert Hector. He is currently a CNRS "directeur de recherche" at the École normale supérieure in Lyon.
