Nicolae Calimachi-Catargiu
Nicolae Callimachi-Catargiu (February 24, 1830 – November 9, 1882) was a conservative Romanian politician who served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs in two terms from November 28, 1869 to February 1, 1870 and December 18, 1870 until March 11, 1871, and as a Romanian envoy to London and Paris. Biography Family His father was the Logothete Ștefan Catargiu (1789-1866), a member of the Three-headed Kaymakam from the Principality of Moldavia (1857 - October 20, 1858), and his mother was Ruxandra Calimachi (1808-1892), who insisted that he bear the name of the great family from which she came. The House of Callimachi, Calimachi, or Kallimachi ( el, Καλλιμάχη, russian: Каллимаки, tr, Kalimakizade; originally ''Calmașul'' or ''Călmașu''), was a Phanariote family of mixed Moldavian (Romanian) and Greek origins. Originating in the boyardom of Orhei County, it gave Moldavia four reigning princes. The family remains present today in modern Romania. Junimea
''Junimea'' was a Romanian literary society founded in Iași in 1863, through the initiative of several foreign-educated personalities led by Titu Maiorescu, Petre P. Carp, Vasile Pogor, Theodor Rosetti and Iacob Negruzzi. The foremost personality and mentor of the society was Maiorescu, who, through the means of scientific papers and essays, helped establish the basis of the modern Romanian culture. Junimea was the most influential intellectual and political association from Romania in the 19th century. Beginnings In 1863, four years after the union of Moldavia and Wallachia (''see: United Principalities''), and after the moving of the capital to Bucharest, five enthusiastic young people who had just returned from their studies abroad created in Iaşi a society which wanted to stimulate the cultural life in the city. The 1866 Constitution of Romania was the fundamental law that capped a period of nation-building in the Danubian Principalities, which had united in 1859. Drafted in a short time and closely modeled on the 1831 Constitution of Belgium, then considered Europe's most liberal, it was substantially modified by Prince (later King) Carol and adopted by the Constituent Assembly. Constantin Grădișteanu
Constantin Grădișteanu (17 September 1833–10 April 1890) was a Wallachian-born Romanian politician. Descended from an old ''boyar'' family, his father was Șerban Grădișteanu. He studied at Paris, earning a degree in literature from the Sorbonne in 1852 and then attending the law faculty. In February 1866, he was named prefect of Ilfov County before being transferred to a similar post in Putna County the following month. A conservative, he was part of the constituent assembly in 1866, the same year he was first elected to the Assembly of Deputies. In 1876, he was sent to the senate. From April to December 1870, Grădișteanu served as Finance Minister in the cabinet of Manolache Costache Epureanu.
