Nico Roozen
Nicolaas Josephus Maria "Nico" Roozen (born 22 April 1953 in Heemskerk) in Solidaridad 23:3, November 2007, p. 5. is a Dutch economist who, in collaboration with Frans van der Hoff and ecumenical development agency Solidaridad (organization), Solidaridad, launched Stichting Max Havelaar, Max Havelaar, the first Fairtrade certification initiative in 1988. Roozen played a key role in convincing several major Dutch retailers to offer Fairtrade certification, Fairtrade goods, which later led to the commercial success of Fairtrade certification. On October 25, 2007, Nico Roozen was invested as an Officer of the Order of Orange Nassau for his years of dedication to Fairtrade. Heemskerk
Heemskerk ( ) is a municipality and a town in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. It is located in the Kennemerland region. History The town was formed during the Middle Ages. In an official deed from the year of 1063, the town was known as ''Hemezen Kyrica'', Latinized Frisian meaning Church of Hemezen, a Frisians, Frisian nun who lived in a religious house there. Frans Van Der Hoff
Frans van der Hoff (16 July 1939 – 13 February 2024), or Francisco VanderHoff Boersma as he is called in Latin America, was a Dutch missionary who, in collaboration with Nico Roozen and ecumenical development agency Solidaridad, launched Max Havelaar, the first Fairtrade label in 1988. Van der Hoff's contacts with Mexican coffee producers were important in securing the supply and ensuring the success of the very first Fairtrade certification initiative. Biography Van der Hoff was born on 16 July 1939, as the seventh of seventeen children to a disciplined farming family, ''van der Hoff-Boersma,'' that had moved from Friesland to the village De Rips in the southern Netherlands. The Solidaridad Network is an international civil society organisation founded in 1969. Its main objective is facilitating the development of socially responsible, ecologically sound and profitable supply chains. It operates through eight regional expertise centers in over 50 countries.
