Nicky Virachkul
Nicky Virachkul (June 3, 1948 – April 17, 1999) was an American professional darts player who competed in the 1970s and 1980s. Background Virachkul was from Lampang, Thailand, and was a javelin thrower during high school. He moved to the United States in 1968 to study business administration at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey. He later became a naturalized citizen. Career Virachkul represented the United States internationally in darts tournaments. He competed at the first Embassy World Darts Championship in 1978, losing narrowly by 7–8 in the semi-final to eventual champion, Leighton Rees. He won third place in a play-off by defeating Stefan Lord. Virachakul reached the quarter-finals on three other occasions: in 1981 (losing to Eric Bristow), 1982 (losing to Bobby George) and 1984 (losing to Dave Whitcombe). Lakeside Leisure Complex
The Lakeside Leisure Complex is a hotel, conferencing, entertainment and associated leisure complex in Frimley Green in west Surrey, England. It hosted the open/men's and women's BDO World Darts Championship every January from 1986 to 2019. History The complex was established in 1972, when Bob Potter bought Wharfenden House and the surrounding grounds and lake. He soon doubled the hall to 1,000 seats principally for hosting comedians and musicians, including North American and internationally acclaimed acts. Lakeside was almost completely destroyed in a fire in November 1978, but was subsequently rebuilt, reopening in October the following year. Ceri Morgan
Ceri Rhys Morgan (22 December 1947 – 29 February 2020 ) was a Welsh professional darts player who competed in British Darts Organisation (BDO) events in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Career Morgan made his World Championship debut in 1979, beating Barry Atkinson in the first round before losing to Tony Brown in the second round. In 1980, Morgan reached the quarter-final, where, as the number 8 seed, he began his campaign in the second round where he defeated Alan Grant before losing to Cliff Lazarenko. He repeated his best ever performances at the World Championships in 1981 and 1984 by reaching the quarter-finals. He lost to John Lowe on both occasions. His last appearance at the World Championships came in 1987 with a first round defeat by Jocky Wilson. One of his biggest paydays came in 1980, when he won the Austin Morris British Masters against Bobby George, the top prize being a £5,500 car from the tournament sponsors. WDF World Cup
The WDF World Cup is a darts tournament organised by the World Darts Federation and held biennially since 1977. It has featured men's events since the beginning, while women's events were added in 1983 and youth events in 1999. The most recent tournament, the 2023 World Cup, was held in Esbjerg, Denmark. The event used to be broadcast on ITV in the United Kingdom, but coverage of the tournament ceased after the 1987 World Cup. Tournament structure Men's national teams participating in the WDF World Cup consist of four players per country, competing as singles, pairs and in a four-player team event. Starting in 2015, women's teams will also consist of four players each and compete in these three types of events, having previously comprised only two players for singles and pairs competitions. Bill Lennard
Bill Lennard (21 June 1934 – 6 August 1996) was an English professional darts player from Manchester. Darts career Lennard played county darts for Lancashire and there are some minor county events that use his name in memorial tournaments. He enjoyed a successful year in 1976 by winning the prestigious News of the World Darts Championship (representing the Cotton Tree Inn, Manchester), the British Matchplay and the Swedish Open. The World Professional Darts Championship did not begin until two years later, Lennard made his debut at the championships in 1979 but lost his first round match to Tony Clark. His best run at the World Championships came in 1980 when he reached the quarter-finals, but was beaten by Tony Brown. Tony Clark again beat Lennard in the first round in 1981 and his last appearance in the World Championship came in 1982 when he was beaten by John Lowe. Alan Glazier
Alan James Glazier (21 January 1939 – 12 November 2020) was an English professional darts player. He used the nickname "The Ton Machine" and was noted for his all-black outfits. Career Glazier was one of the first darts players who turned professional in an attempt to make a full-time living from the game of darts as it grew in popularity during the 1970s. He was one of the players who appeared in the very first World Professional Darts Championship in 1978, losing to Alan Evans in the first round. In 1979, he reached the quarter-finals at the World Championship before being beaten by Tony Brown. Glazier then had a disappointing run as he went out in the first round of the World Championship in 1980, 1982 and 1983, and did not make it to the 1981 Championships. His best run at the World Championships came in 1985, losing a quarter-final to Eric Bristow, and in 1986, when he reached the semi-finals for the only time, again falling to Bristow.
