Nicholls Town
Nicholls Town is a town located in North Andros, part of Andros island in the Bahamas. The town features a sweeping beachfront. It is named for Edward Nicolls, an Anglo-Irish military leader in the Caribbean in the early 19th century. He was an active abolitionist and because of him many former Afro American slaves were able to escape from the U.S. The founders of Nicholls Town were ex-slave refugees from the United States. Andros, Bahamas
Andros is an archipelago in The Bahamas, the largest of the Bahamian Islands. Politically considered a single island, Andros in total has an area greater than all the other 700 Bahamian islands combined. The land area of Andros consists of hundreds of small islets and cays connected by mangrove estuaries and tidal swamplands, together with three major islands: North Andros, Mangrove Cay, and South Andros. The three main islands are separated by bights, estuaries that trifurcate the island from east to west. It is long by wide at the widest point. Etymology The indigenous Lucayan people called the island ''Habacoa'' (or ''Babucca'') meaning "large upper outer land". Districts Of The Bahamas
Local government in the Bahamas exists at two levels: 32 districts and 41 towns. The boundaries of districts are defined by the First Schedule of The Bahamas Local Government Act 1996 (as amended by law and declarations of the Minister responsible for Family Island Affairs), defined with reference to parliamentary constituency boundaries. The Second Schedule lists 13 districts which are divided into town areas. Towns are governed by directly elected town committees. Second Schedule districts are governed by nine-person district councils composed of the chairs of the town committees, and if numerically required, additional people elected by the town committees. North Andros
North Andros is one of the 31 districts of the Bahamas. It is also the largest district (in area) in the country. It has some of the largest settlements on Andros Island and many churches as well. Edward Nicolls
General Sir Edward Nicolls ( – 5 February 1865) was a Royal Marines officer and colonial administrator who served in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars and War of 1812. Known as "Fighting Nicolls", he had a distinguished military career, and according to his obituary in ''The Times'', Nicolls fought "in no fewer than 107 actions, in various parts of the world" and had "his left leg broken and his right leg severely injured, was shot through the body and right arm, had received a severe sabre cut in the head, was bayoneted in the chest, and had lost the sight of an eye." Nicolls was born in Coleraine, Ireland into a family with a military tradition; his father was surveyor of excise in Coleraine, and his maternal grandfather was a rector. Abolitionism
Abolitionism, or the abolitionist movement, is the political movement to end slavery and liberate enslaved individuals around the world. The first country to fully outlaw slavery was France in 1315, but it was later used in its colonies. The first country to abolish and punish slavery for indigenous people was Spain with the New Laws in 1542. San Andros Airport is an airport near Nicholls Town on Andros Island in The Bahamas. Facilities The airport resides at an elevation of above mean sea level.
