Niall McNeill
Niall MacNeill (1899–1969) was an Irish army officer and entomologist who specialised in Odonata and Heteroptera. He was the son of Eoin MacNeill, founder of the Irish Volunteers, which Niall MacNeill joined later becoming an officer in the Irish Army. With the rank of colonel, he specialised in surveying, training with the Royal Engineers on the Isle of Wight. After retiring from the army he worked for the Ordnance Survey of Ireland; he was made Assistant Director of the body in 1935. MacNeill is best known for his studies of larval Odonata on which he worked with A. Eric Gardner and Frederic Charles Fraser. He was a personal friend of both, and of Cynthia Longfield. Niall MacNeill was a Member of the Royal Irish Academy and a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society. Cynthia Longfield
Cynthia Evelyn Longfield (16 August 1896 – 27 June 1991) was an Anglo-Irish entomologist and explorer and the first woman member of the Entomological Society. She was an expert on the dragonfly and was nicknamed "Madame Dragonfly". She travelled extensively and published ''The Dragonflies of the British Isles'' in 1937. She worked as a research associate at the Natural History Museum, London, and was the expert on the dragonflies there, particularly on African species. Early life Cynthia Evelyn Longfield was born on 16 August 1896, on Pont Street, Belgravia, London. She was the youngest daughter of Alice Elizabeth (née Mason) and Montifort Longfield, of Castle Mary, Cloyne, County Cork. She had two sisters. Her mother Alice Longfield grew up near Oxford, and was the daughter of a scientist. Alice died in 1945. The Royal Entomological Society is a learned society devoted to the study of insects. It aims to disseminate information about insects and to improve communication between entomologists. The society was founded in 1833 as the Entomological Society of London. It had many antecedents beginning as the Society of Entomologists of London. The Royal Irish Academy (RIA; ), based in Dublin, is an academic body that promotes study in the natural sciences, arts, literature, and social sciences. Frederic Charles Fraser
Frederic Charles Fraser (15 February 1880, in Woolwich – 2 March 1963, in Linwood) was an England, English entomologist who specialised in Odonata. Following army service in India as a surgeon with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel (United Kingdom), lieutenant colonel, Fraser devoted himself entirely to dragonflies, mostly in the Natural History Museum, London, British Museum (Natural History), where his collection is maintained. Fraser's correspondence with A. Eric Gardner is in the library of the Natural History Museum, London.
