The Niagara Falls Public Library is a public library system in the Canadian city of Niagara Falls, Ontario. The library has three branches: Victoria Avenue, Stamford Centre, and the Community Centre. There are two former branch libraries: Drummond (closed 1993) and Chippawa (closed 2024). A bookmobile provides resources to different areas of the city. History Before a public library or the city of Niagara Falls were established, mechanics institutes existed in the townships of Stamford, Drummondville, and Clifton. In 1895, all mechanics institutes in Ontario were converted into public libraries, with these services eventually becoming the purview of an expanding Niagara Falls. Stamford Township
Stamford Township is a former incorporated and now geographic township (Canada)#Ontario, township in Upper Canada, later Ontario, on the Niagara Peninsula. In 1962 the township was Amalgamation (politics), amalgamated with the city of Niagara Falls, Ontario. History It was originally designated Township #2 in the Home District of the Quebec Colony in Canada. Following the creation of Upper Canada in 1791, Township #2 was renamed Stamford and placed within the newly created County of Lincoln. Niagara-on-the-Lake Public Library
The Niagara-on-the-Lake Public Library is a library in Niagara on the Lake, Ontario, Canada. It offers various resources and programs. The library received press coverage for firing its chief librarian in 2024. History The library originally opened in 1855, relocated multiple times, and transitioned to its current location in 2000. A chief librarian was hired in 1969 and she worked there until her retirement in 2004. She expanded the library's access to new technology and weeded the collection to exclude outdated materials such as travel guides from the early 1900s. Thorold Public Library
The Thorold Public Library is a building in Thorold, Ontario, located on 14 Ormond Street North. History Thorold's first library was a private institution that opened in 1858. 110 patrons paid the $1 membership fee for access to the 600 books in the library's collection. This library ceased to exist in 1867. It was replaced by another library in 1869. This second library kept the same $1 membership fee until 1895, when it was discounted to half the price in an effort to grow its customer base. The library continued to struggle and eventually asked the city to take over its collection of 5,000 books. Under the city's ownership, it became a public library. Chippawa is a community located within the city of Niagara Falls, Ontario. The village was founded in 1850, and became part of the City of Niagara Falls, Ontario by amalgamation in 1970.
