Nguyễn Văn Lợi
Nguyễn Văn Lợi (June 9, 1947 – December 20, 2020) was a Vietnamese linguist who served as the deputy director of the Institute of Linguistics (Vietnamese: :vi:Viện Ngôn ngữ học (Việt Nam), Viện Ngôn ngữ học) at the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences. Early life Nguyễn was born on June 9, 1947, in Nam Định Province, Vietnam. Education and career From 1966 to 1970, Nguyễn studied linguistics at the Department of Literature of the University of Hanoi. In 1970, started working at the Institute of Linguistics of the Vietnam Social Sciences Committee (now the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences). At the Institute of Linguistics, he did research on ethnic minority languages in Vietnam. Nguyễn did his graduate studies at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences from 1979 and 1983, where he wrote a dissertation on historical phonetics and Hmong dialects. Nam Định () ( vi, Tỉnh Nam Định) is a province in the southern part of the Red River Delta region of northern Vietnam. It borders Ninh Bình province to the southwest, Hà Nam province to the northwest, Thái Bình province to the northeast, and the Gulf of Tonkin to the southeast. , it is the 52nd largest province by area and the 12th most populous province of Vietnam. Ruc Language
Rục is a Vietic language spoken by the Ruc people of Tuyên Hóa district, Quảng Bình province, Vietnam. ''Rục'' literally means 'underground spring', and is a critically endangered language spoken by a small ethnic group that practiced a hunter-gatherer lifestyle until the late 20th century. History Ruc speakers were hunter-gatherers until the late 1970s, when they were relocated into sedentary villages by the Vietnamese government. The 1985 Soviet-Vietnamese Linguistic Expedition found that there were no more than 200 Ruc people. Half of the Ruc died from a cholera epidemic in the late 1980s. Today, the Ruc live together with the Sach in villages close to the Laotian border. Ruc settlements include Yên Hợp and Phú Minh. Phonology Unlike Vietnamese, Rục allows for presyllables with a minor vowel, such as ''cakuː4'' 'bear' (cf. Vietnamese ''gấu''). Paul King Benedict
Paul King Benedict (; July 5, 1912 – July 21, 1997) was an American anthropologist, mental health professional, and linguist who specialized in languages of East and Southeast Asia. He is well known for his 1942 proposal of the Austro-Tai language family and also his reconstruction of Proto-Sino-Tibetan and Proto-Tibeto-Burman. He was also a practicing psychiatrist in the New York area for 20 years and was also a pioneer in the field of ethnopsychiatry. Life and career Benedict was born in Poughkeepsie, New York and graduated from Poughkeepsie High School in 1930.
