The Western Australian Open, also known as the WA Open, is a golf tournament on the PGA Tour of Australasia. It had been a tour event every year since 2009 with the exception of 2019. History The first Western Australian Amateur Championship was held in 1911. This consisted of a 36-hole stroke-play qualification stage, played in a single day, followed by match-play to determine the champion. The leading four players in the stroke-play qualified in 1911, increasing to 8 in 1912. In 1913 the stroke-play stage was opened up to professionals, becoming the first Western Australian Open Championship. It was played at the Fremantle links on 28 August, nearly 30 players competing. In both 1911 and 1912, Norman Fowlie had led the stroke-play stage but in 1913 he was challenged by Clyde Pearce, who had won both the Australian Open and Australian Amateur in 1908, as well as losing the final three times in the amateur. Michael Sim (born 23 October 1984) is an Australian professional golfer. Amateur career Sim was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, and moved to Australia when he was 5 years old. He was an Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder in 2002. He was the top ranked amateur in the world in 2005 having won four titles during the year including the Sunnehanna Amateur and the Monroe Invitational. He turned professional at the end of the year. Professional career Sim played on the Nationwide Tour in 2006, and qualified for the PGA Tour by virtue of a 19th-place finish on the end of season money list, aided by a win at PalmettoPride Classic. Jason Norris
Jason Norris (born 7 September 1972) is an Australian professional golfer. In 2007, Norris won the New South Wales Open and the Western Australia PGA Championship when both were part of the Von Nida Tour. Norris also won the 2010 Victorian Open. He was runner-up at the 2012 New Zealand Open. In 2015, he was runner-up at the Maekyung Open. Norris won the 2017 Fiji International by four strokes. In the final round, he had eight birdies and three bogeys. He entered the tournament ranked 1238th in the world.
