Next Gilgit Baltistan Assembly Election
Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan, less than 60 days after the dissolution of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly, which is set to dissolve in November 2025, unless dissolved earlier: in which case the election shall be held within 90 days after dissolution. This means that the election must be held by or before November 2025. Background 2020 elections Following the elections in 2020, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) emerged as the largest party after winning 16 of the 24 general seats in the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly, and securing a two-thirds supermajority in the assembly after six women representatives (four who went to the PTI) and the three technocrats (two who went to the PTI) were added with a final total of 22 out of 33 seats. Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly
The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly (GBA), formerly known as Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly (GBLA), is a unicameral legislature of elected representatives of Autonomous territory (de-facto Pakistani province) of Gilgit-Baltistan, which is located in Jutial neighbourhood in the city of Gilgit, the capital of Gilgit-Baltistan. It was established under the Gilgit-Baltistan Empowerment and Self-Governance Order in 2009 which granted the region self-rule and an elected legislative assembly having a total of 33 seats, with 24 general seats, 6 seats reserved for women and 3 reserved for Technocrats and Professionals. Muhammad Khalid Khurshid Khan (Urdu: محمد خالد خورشید خان ; born 17 November 1980) is a Pakistani lawyer and politician who is the current Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan ''de-facto'' province of Pakistan, from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. Hafiz Hafeezur Rehman ( ur, ) is a Pakistani politician who served as the 2nd Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, a territory in Northern Pakistan (''de facto'' province) and also leader of Pakistan's conservative political party PML-N, in Gilgit-Baltistan. He served in office from 26 June 2015 to 23 June 2020. Amjad Hussain Azar is a Pakistani politician who has been the Leader of the Opposition of the Gilgit Baltistan Assembly since November 2020. Political career Azar contested the 2020 Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly election on 15 November 2020 from GBA-1 (Gilgit-I) and GBA-4 (Nagar-I) on the ticket of the Pakistan Peoples Party. He won GBA-1 (Gilgit-I) by the margin of 3,393 votes over the Independent runner up Sultan Raees. He garnered 10,875 votes while Raees received 7,482 votes. 2020 Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly Election
The 2020 Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections were held on 15 November 2020. Elections will be held in 24 constituencies, each electing one member to the 3rd Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly. 330 candidates will contest these elections, either representing one of the political parties of Gilgit-Baltistan (at the time of the 2020 elections) or being an independent candidate. The elections were originally scheduled to be held on 18 August 2020, but were postponed in July due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which severely affected Gilgit-Baltistan.
