''Newsround'' (stylised as ''newsround'') is a BBC children's news programme, which has run continuously since 4 April 1972. Originally ''John Craven's Newsround'', it was one of the world's first television news magazines aimed specifically at children. Initially commissioned as a short series by BBC Children's Department, who held editorial control, its facilities were provided by BBC News. Broadcast on CBBC, the programme is aimed at 5 to 15-year-olds. History Originally ''John Craven's Newsround'', it was first presented by John Craven between 4 April 1972 and 22 June 1989. Originally, stand-in presenters, such as Richard Whitmore, came from the main BBC News bulletins. Edward Barnes (television Executive)
Edward Campbell Barnes (8 October 1928 – 8 September 2021) was a British television executive, and producer at the BBC. He was credited with creating the children's television programme ''Newsround''. Biography Barnes was educated at Milton Abbey School, an independent boarding school for boys (now co-educational), in Milton Abbas, Dorset. Barnes was a co-creator of ''Blue Peter'' in 1958, and the programme's assistant director. Later, he was a producer of the series. It was Barnes, with colleague Biddy Baxter, who in late 1962 toured London pet shops after the show's mongrel puppy died and a clandestine substitute (soon known as Blue Peter pets#Petra, Petra) was needed so as not to needlessly upset young viewers. Krishnan Guru-Murthy
Krishnan Guru-Murthy (born 5 April 1970) is a British journalist. He is the lead presenter of ''Channel 4 News''. He also presents ''Unreported World'', a foreign-affairs documentary series. Early life Guru-Murthy's father, an Indian consultant radiologist, worked in Blackburn and Burnley. The family lived in Liverpool, then moved to a "gothic folly" in a village outside Burnley. Guru-Murthy attended the then-private Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Blackburn, Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School in Blackburn, before studying philosophy, politics and economics at Hertford College, Oxford. Space Shuttle
The Space Shuttle is a retired, partially reusable launch system, reusable low Earth orbital spacecraft system operated from 1981 to 2011 by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as part of the Space Shuttle program. Its official program name was the Space Transportation System (STS), taken from the 1969 plan led by U.S. vice president Spiro Agnew for a system of reusable spacecraft where it was the only item funded for development. The first (STS-1) of four orbital test flights occurred in 1981, leading to operational flights (STS-5) beginning in 1982. Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster
On January 28, 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger, Space Shuttle ''Challenger'' broke apart 73 seconds into its flight, killing all seven crew members aboard. The spacecraft disintegrated above the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 16:39:13Coordinated Universal Time, UTC (11:39:13a.m. Eastern Time Zone, EST, local time at the launch site). Martin Bell
Martin Bell, (born 31 August 1938) is a British UNICEF (UNICEF UK) Ambassador, a former broadcast war Journalist, reporter and former independent politician who became the Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament (MP) for Tatton (UK Parliament constituency), Tatton from 1997 to 2001. Michael Buerk
Michael Duncan Buerk (; born 18 February 1946) is a British journalist and newsreader. He presented BBC News from 1973 to 2002 and has been the host of BBC Radio 4's '' Moral Maze'' since 1990. He was also the presenter of BBC One's docudrama '' 999'' from 1992 to 2003. From 2017, Buerk also presented the TV programme ''Royal Recipes'' which ran for two series. Early life Buerk was born on 18 February 1946, in St. Philomena's Nursing Home, Solihull. He moved to Vancouver as a young child before returning to the West Midlands after the failure of his parents' marriage, when Buerk was three. John Humphrys
Desmond John Humphrys (born 17 August 1943) is a Welsh people, Welsh broadcaster. From 1981 to 1987 he was the main presenter of the ''BBC Nine O'Clock News, Nine O'Clock News'', the flagship BBC News television programme, and from 1987 until 2019 he presented on the BBC Radio 4 breakfast programme ''Today (BBC Radio 4), Today''. Terry Baddoo
Terry Baddoo is a television executive and a former TV host. He is half- English and half-Ghanaian, and lives in the United States. Biography Baddoo was born in London, England, and earned a bachelor's degree in Education from London University. Lizo Mzimba
Lizo Mzimba is an English journalist and television presenter. He is best known for being a presenter for '' Newsround'' between 1998 and 2008 and is currently the Entertainment Correspondent for BBC News. Early life Mzimba attended the independent Solihull School (during which time he was also leader of the Birmingham Schools' Symphony Orchestra) and the University of Birmingham. Paul Welsh (journalist)
Paul Welsh is a British television and radio correspondent and presenter. He was born in England in 1961, but moved frequently because his father was a serving member of the RAF. He studied Physics at the University of Nottingham from 1979 to 1982. Rebecca Joanne Jago (née Gunton; born 20 April 1976 in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk) is an English television news presenter, currently employed by ITV Anglia. Career Jago attended Stowmarket High School from 1989 to 1994. Matthew Price
Matthew William Price (born 5 June 1972 in Hampstead, London) is a British journalist who currently works as Chief Correspondent for the BBC Radio 4 Today programme.
